Position PurposeThe Outside Plant Engineer provides engineering support for all aspects of outside plant initiatives. This full‑time, benefit‑eligible position involves fiber optic plant and deployments, including staking, costing, permitting, and contractor selection. The engineer will manage project status reporting, route documentation, and network integration plans, working closely with operations and customers.
Requirements Education & Experience- College degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent work experience.
- Fiber optics training, including fusion splicing, fiber storage techniques, optical design considerations, optical physical characteristics, and network components.
- Knowledge of Outside Plant route planning and construction management.
- Regular hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM M–F; however, hours may vary by job requirements.
- Valid state driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Self‑motivated and highly productive.
- Strong general PC skills including drafting, mapping, and GIS database administration.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; able to communicate effectively at all levels.
- Highly developed organization and coordination skills.
- Support the development of outside plant (OSP) initiatives, maintain OSP records, and assist with facility‑related maintenance issues.
- Provide preliminary route proposals and cost estimates to support business cases; perform route staking and evaluate bids for construction.
- Oversee construction to ensure adherence to route design and plant placement specifications, obtain permitting and rights‑of‑way, verify clean‑up, and review contractor invoices for billing accuracy.
- Create as‑built documentation, coordinate inclusion of new plant into One‑Call databases, and notify the OSP Locate Company of new assets.
- Represent Bluebird Network on all OSP issues with State Departments of Transportation, One‑Call Dig Centers, and facility locate projects.
- Plan, design, maintain, document, and protect Bluebird’s optical backbone plant, including third‑party network plant.
- Collaborate with Bluebird employees, contractors, vendors, and customers; represent Bluebird professionally in all community interactions.
