Communications & Design Student Coordinator
The Communications & Design Student Coordinator supports Michigan State University New Student Orientation (NSO) through creative communication, graphic design, social media content, and promotional materials. This position works closely with NSO professional staff and student leaders to develop engaging, accessible, and on-brand content that welcomes new Spartans and supports NSO programs and events.
Student Coordinators are expected to contribute approximately 8–10 hours per week and work primarily in person with the NSO team. Hours may vary based on program needs, with additional hours available during major NSO events and programming periods.
Pay Rate: $16.15/hour
Hours: 8–10 hours/week

The Communications & Design Student Coordinator will:
- Collaborate with the NSO Events and Communications teams to develop promotional materials for NSO programs and events.
- Create social media graphics and other digital content for platforms such as Instagram and Tik Tok.
- Develop content and support the digital strategy for:
- Important dates and upcoming events
- Event promotions
- Theme reveals
- Meet-the-team features
- Campus resource highlights
- Student engagement campaigns
- Research current social media trends and identify opportunities to engage incoming Spartans.
- Assist with developing and maintaining a social media content calendar.
- Support the creation and editing of promotional videos using tools such as Canva and Cap Cut.
- Assist with the NSO newsletter and other communications sent to incoming students and families/supporters.
- Participate in brainstorming and planning meetings with NSO staff and student leaders.
The Student Coordinator will:
- Concept and design promotional materials, merchandise, event graphics, stickers, apparel, and other NSO collateral.
- Create materials that align with NSO's established branding, annual themes, and Michigan State University's brand standards.
- Apply basic principles of typography, color, composition, and visual communication.
- Create accessible digital materials appropriate for a diverse audience.
- Assist with the development of graphics and presentations used for Orientation Leader training and NSO programming.
- Create or update visual materials for Fall Welcome and other NSO events.
- Collaborate with event planning teams to bring program concepts and themes to life visually.
Student Coordinators may also:
- Assist with creating Spotify playlists and cover graphics for NSO events.
- Support NSO hiring processes, including interviews and communication with student staff.
- Participate in phone banking, webinars, and other outreach efforts.
- Assist with NSO events and programs as needed.
- Attend regular team meetings and provide updates on assigned projects.
- Complete other duties related to NSO programming as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Be an undergraduate student at Michigan State University.
- Be able to work approximately 8–10 hours per week during the academic year.
- Be able to work primarily in person with the New Student Orientation team.
- Demonstrate strong time management and organizational skills.
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, and campus partners.
- Be able to work independently while also contributing effectively to a team.
- Be open to feedback and willing to learn new skills.
- Demonstrate a commitment to creating an inclusive environment for students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Be comfortable in front of the camera
- Serve as a positive representative of Michigan State University and follow University policies and expectations.
