The Vegetable Pathology Lab is seeking an undergraduate student to assist with summer research projects. This position involves working with graduate students and other undergraduate research assistants on multiple projects concerning plant pathogens and their hosts. The job is primarily lab based but may be expanded into a field component. Prior lab experience is desired but not required. You will receive training in the specific techniques needed.
HoursThis is a part-time temporary position during the summer semester. Applicants must be available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week (within the hours of 8am-5pm Monday-Friday) during the summer. There is a possibility of employment extension through the fall semester, based on interest, performance, and availability.
- Extraction of plant pathogens from plant material
- Perform DNA extractions, PCR, and qPCR
- Taking and cataloging high-quality photographs of research projects
- Media preparation
- Pathogen culture collection and maintenance
- Perform DNA extractions and PCR
- Sterile transfer of pathogens
- Autoclaving
- Dishwashing
- Drive a lab truck to field research sites to collect samples
- Enrolled undergraduate student in a relevant field of study (e.g. biomedical laboratory science, microbiology, plant science, etc.)
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to work independently, while effectively communicating with co-workers and supervisors
- Attention to detail, excellent record keeping, and ability to follow protocols
- Critical thinking and problem solving skills
- Previous experience with DNA extraction and PCR is highly sought after but not required. Training will be provided.
