Postdoctoral Scholar-Fixed Term
The Topp Lab at Michigan State University is recruiting multiple postdoctoral researchers across complementary areas of root biology, phenomics, and translational crop science. The lab is jointly affiliated with the Departments of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences and Plant Biology, and the Plant Resilience Institute.
Our mission is:
To enhance sustainable crop production and ecosystem services through the rational design and deployment of more efficient root systems. The lab integrates high-throughput phenotyping, advanced imaging, quantitative genetics, gene editing, and large-scale field experimentation to connect root system architecture to whole-plant performance and ecosystem outcomes. We seek creative, collaborative scientists to join the following track:
Molecular and Genetic Mechanisms of Root System Architecture.
This position focuses on identifying and functionally characterizing genes that regulate root development and plant–environment interactions. Research areas may include:
- Genome-wide association and quantitative genetics of root traits.
- Integration of genomic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic datasets.
- Gene editing and validation of candidate loci.
- Cell and developmental biology of root growth and branching.
- Plant–microbe interactions, including arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis Ideal candidates will have strong expertise in molecular genetics, functional genomics, gene editing, or related disciplines.
Postdoctoral scholars in the Topp Lab are expected to:
- Lead innovative, high-impact research aligned with the lab's mission.
- Publish in leading peer-reviewed journals.
- Collaborate across disciplines and institutions.
- Mentor graduate students, undergraduates, and technical staff.
- Develop fellowship and independent funding proposals as part of their professional development We value intellectual boldness, rigorous quantitative thinking, collaborative spirit, and a commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture through inclusive and impactful science.
Research Environment and Facilities Michigan State University provides an exceptional and highly collaborative research environment spanning plant biology, crop sciences, computational sciences, and ecosystem research. The Topp Lab maintains affiliations across Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences, Plant Biology, and the Plant Resilience Institute, providing extensive opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration across campus. The lab leverages MSU's strengths in genomics, quantitative genetics, and computational biology, as well as shared facilities for advanced microscopy,
-omics technologies, and high-performance computing. In addition, Dr. Topp is spearheading the development of a new X-ray imaging facility with focus on non-destructive, high-resolution analysis of root growth and soil interactions.
This initiative will expand MSU's capacity for structural–functional root phenotyping and provide unique opportunities for method development and innovation. Field-based research is supported through MSU's extensive experimental research stations, including the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station and multiple campus and regional agricultural sites representing diverse soil types and management systems. These resources enable rigorous integration of mechanistic root biology with field-scale agronomic and ecosystem outcomes.
Postdoctoral scholars will have opportunities to engage broadly across MSU's research community and to help shape emerging infrastructure and collaborative initiatives.
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, citizenship, age, disability or protected veteran status.
