The department is responsible for all aspects of maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and installing chillers, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, and associated packaged controls.
Key responsibilities include:
- Repair, maintain, alter, and install large and small rooftop and window air conditioning units and mechanical refrigeration units/systems; work on chambers and other related temperature controlled rooms; overhaul and service refrigeration units by replacing and adjusting worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors, evaporators and vacuum pumps; repair leaks on valves, piping, connections, fittings and coils; start systems, observe operations, interpret gauges and instruments, and adjust mechanisms such as valves, controls and pumps.
- Perform pressure checks of systems for leaks, properly evacuate and recharge refrigeration systems for proper refrigerant charge; test components using electrical, mechanical and pneumatic testing equipment; assist or perform work on other mechanical systems as capable.
- Interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches and job specifications; estimate time and material to be used on the job; stock, maintain and may operate a University service vehicle; carry on‑call cell phone on a weekly rotating basis.
- 30% Maintain large chillers used for providing chilled water for air conditioning.
- 30% Maintain walk‑in coolers and freezers.
- 20% Work on rack refrigeration systems.
- 10% Maintain variable refrigerant flow and split air conditioning units.
- 10% Perform refrigeration tracking and associated documentation; correspondence through email, training, meetings and professional development.
- Completion of high school education or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
- Successful completion of an applicable trade specific Trades Helper program, completion of an approved apprenticeship program or an associate degree or equivalent education/experience.
- Five years’ experience in the trade that includes commercial refrigeration and air‑conditioning installation, maintenance and troubleshooting and demonstrated ability to independently perform duties.
- Possession of EPA 608 Universal Certification.
- Must possess a State of Michigan Contractor’s License with endorsements in refrigeration (#4) and Limited Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (#7), to receive progression step increases at and after the six‑month mark.
- Expert knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Expert knowledge of applicable building codes, rules and regulations (local, state and federal).
- Possession of a valid operator’s license.
- Must furnish own tools.
- Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 required.
State of Michigan Mechanical Contractor License with endorsements for #4 – refrigeration and #7 – limited refrigeration or #8 – unlimited refrigeration/air conditioning service; more than five years of experience with troubleshooting, installation, evacuating and charging of large commercial air‑conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including chillers, split systems, walk‑in coolers, freezers, growth chambers and ammonia refrigeration systems; experience working on large tonnage mechanical and absorption chillers;
