Position Summary
Trades Helper II - Roofing. This is a trades development position that supports the progression of an entry‑level employee toward journey‑level equivalency through successful completion of trade‑specific competency assessments and on‑the‑job experience. The role assists with installation, repair, and replacement of low‑ and steep‑sloped roofing systems, including tile, slate, shingles, metal, and hot, cold, and specialty roofing systems. Additional duties include flashing systems, gutter, downspout, and sump maintenance.
The position provides hands‑on training in manual and powered roofing equipment, rigging, ladder and scaffold safety, blueprint reading, material requisition, and estimation. A university service vehicle may be operated as needed.
Salary: $25.68‑$28.92 per hour, based on progression. MSU Benefits include free comprehensive health care for the employee and family, 10% retirement contribution, generous sick, vacation, personal and holiday time. Regular in‑person attendance is required.
Job ResponsibilitiesOn‑the‑job learning and support of various roofing trade tasks.
- 20% – Installation, repair, or replacement of low and steep‑sloped roofing systems.
- 20% – Installation, repair, or replacement of flashing systems.
- 20% – Troubleshooting leakage, drainage, damp‑proofing, and waterproofing using conventional and non‑destructive evaluation techniques, including epoxy injections.
- 15% – Cleaning, installing, repairing, or replacing gutters, downspouts, and sumps.
- 15% – Life Safety and general trade knowledge – PPE, tools, material, and equipment.
- 10% – Related instruction in the roofing trade: time tracking, customer communication, and correspondence via email, training sessions, meetings, and professional development activities.
- Completion of a high school education and two years of experience as a Trades Helper I or equivalent roofing experience; or an associate’s degree in a field related to roofing; or an equivalent combination of education, technical training, and experience.
- Some knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the roofing trade.
- Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator’s license; must drive a university vehicle to perform job duties of this classification.
- Must furnish own tools.
- Occasional to frequent lifting of more than 75 pounds.
- Competence in basic personal computer terminology and operations, including use of e‑mail and the Internet.
