Michigan State University Infrastructure Planning and Facilities invites applications for the position of Fire Alarm Mechanic and we need your help. The department is responsible for all aspects of installing, repairing and maintaining electrical maintenance and life safety systems.

This position will alter, install, maintain, modify, inspect, and repair the University's fire alarm systems and components. This position may staff a swing shift trouble truck. A breakdown of the job responsibilities are as follows: 30% - Troubleshoot and repair fire alarms systems. Identify applicable codes and standards pertaining to fire alarm systems. 30% - Perform preventive maintenance, record keeping for fire alarm systems, and coordinate programming of the system.

20% - Fabricate, install, modify, campus fire alarm system systems. Requisition of equipment, materials, and parts. 10% - Interpreting and detailing blueprints, as-builts, specifications and archives for for the purpose of investigating repairs and for project preparation. 10% - Correspondence through email, training, meetings and professional development.

This position will engage in high performing, leading edge practices, valuing people, partners and stewardship.

Minimum Requirements
  • Completion of a high school education or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • Successful completion of an applicable trade-specific Trades Helper program, or completion of an approved apprenticeship program, or an associate degree, or equivalent education/experience.
  • Five years' experience in the trade that includes five years of experience in commercial fire alarm systems installation, maintenance and troubleshooting and demonstrated ability to independently perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification, or equivalent experience.
  • Possession of the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) I certification or a State of Michigan Journeyman Electrical License.
  • Must have possession of National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) II certification to receive progression step increases at and after the 12-month mark.
  • Must have possession of the State of Michigan Fire Alarm Specialty Technician License to receive progression step increase at the 24-month mark.
  • Expert knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Expert knowledge of applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes, rules, and regulations (local, state, and federal).
  • Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.
  • Must furnish own hand tools.
  • Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds.
Desired Qualifications

Associate's degree in electronics technology; electrical journeyman's license;
Possession of the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) II Certification; possession of State of Michigan Fire Alarm Specialty Technician (FAST) license; knowledge of sprinkler systems (wet and dry);
Ability to respond to emergency call-ins within one hour of initial contact.

Duties associated with this position involve lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds, pushing/pulling, and climbing ladder, stairs, and working from various types of equipment, including scaffolding.
