About the Position
The City of East Palo Alto is seeking a Chief Building Official. Reporting to the Community and Economic Development Director, this key leadership role oversees building inspections, plan review, permit processing, code compliance, and code enforcement activities to ensure construction and development are safe, efficient, and compliant with Federal, State, and local regulations. The Chief Building Official provides strategic direction, develops and implements policies and service standards, manages the division's budget, and leads professional and technical staff.
The position serves as a technical resource to developers, contractors, property owners, and community stakeholders; represents the City in code‑related disputes and public forums; prepares complex staff reports; and plays a critical role in emergency response and post‑disaster evaluations under the City’s Emergency Operations Plan.
The ideal candidate is an inspiring, ethical, and service‑oriented leader with strong technical expertise in building regulations and demonstrated experience in code enforcement operations. They are a clear communicator and collaborative problem solver who exercises sound judgment in politically sensitive or high‑profile matters while balancing transparency, diplomacy, and accountability. This individual is adaptable, highly organized, and committed to continuous improvement, aligning division goals with City Council priorities and the City’s strategic direction.
Bilingual proficiency is highly desirable.
