Lead Payroll Analyst – Hybrid (Human Resources)

Location: 50 Amica Way, Lincoln, RI 02865. Hybrid – onsite days required at Lincoln campus.

Position Summary: Under limited direction, the Lead Payroll Analyst serves as the organization’s payroll subject matter expert and provides functional leadership for payroll operations, with a primary focus on Workday Payroll. This role is responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely processing of payroll, maintaining compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, and driving continuous process improvement. As the primary Workday Payroll expert, the Lead Payroll Analyst leads system optimization efforts and supports payroll-related projects and enhancements.

They also offer day‑to‑day guidance, training, and mentorship to payroll team members.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary Workday Payroll subject matter expert for the payroll team, providing technical leadership and guidance on payroll processes and system functionality
  • Process end‑to‑end payroll accurately, timely, and in compliance with applicable policies and regulations
  • Review payroll results, identify discrepancies, and resolve complex payroll issues, escalations, and exceptions prior to payroll finalization
  • Participate in the transition to Workday & OSV, including testing, validation, and related activities
  • Monitor, interpret, and implement changes to federal, state, and local payroll regulations, ensuring ongoing compliance and proactively communicating impacts to leadership
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve payroll policies, procedures, controls, and workflows to support operational excellence and compliance
  • Identify, recommend, and lead process improvement and automation initiatives that enhance payroll efficiency, accuracy, scalability, and employee experience
  • Support internal and external audits by preparing documentation, responding to inquiries, and ensuring compliance with established controls
  • Lead year‑end payroll activities, including tax reporting, reconciliations, regulatory filings, and employee communications (e.g., form W‑2 and 1099‑R balancing)
  • Partner with HR, HRIS, Finance, Technology, external vendors, and third‑party providers to support payroll operations, pension administration, system initiatives, and regulatory compliance
  • Perform other duties as required
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Human Resources, or a related field required
  • Significant hands‑on experience with Workday Payroll required
  • Seven to ten years of progressive payroll experience, including experience in complex, multi‑state payroll environments
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll regulations and tax requirements
  • Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills with a high level of attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple responsibilities, and lead initiatives
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation a plus
