Description:

The Early Childhood Teacher under the direction of the Principal must be versed in the Early Learning and Development Standards for the state of Rhode Island. Teachers will provide guidance to families, teachers, and administrators on what children should know and be able to do as they enter kindergarten.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Be the educational leader in his/her classroom and demonstrate necessary skills to create an atmosphere favorable to learning and development.
  • Be responsible for the improvement and enrichment of instruction in the classroom.
  • At all times be a guidance teacher.
  • Encourage child‑parent‑teacher communication to promote instruction.
  • Earn the highest professional development through a continuing program of teacher education.
  • Apply guidelines of the Department in methods of instruction.
  • Cooperate with the principal, department head, and fellow teachers to solve educational problems.
  • Adjust educational practices to meet individual differences and consult specialists when needed.
  • Responsibilities in relation to the testing program:
    • (a) Ensure mental ability, achievement, and other authorized tests are administered consistently.
    • (b) Continuously improve the testing program by observing, critiquing, and suggesting improvements.
    • (c) Use test results to improve classroom instruction.
  • Attend all meetings called by the principal and department head and contribute to discussions.
  • Associate with professional organizations related to instruction.
  • Support school programs that promote good public relations in the community.
  • Identify and encourage unusual talents in the classroom.
  • Keep abreast of general educational practices across K‑12.
  • Cooperate with the principal on inventories, budgets, library orders, and reports.
  • Promote good health habits for students and self.
  • Cooperate with special teachers in physical education, art, and music programs.
  • Encourage participation in extracurricular activities that broaden student experiences.
  • Provide general supervision of the classroom and cooperate on other supervision duties.
  • Assist in maintaining prescribed school records.
  • Fulfill fire drill requirements.
  • Enforce rules and regulations related to school functions.
  • Provide daily safety education to pupils.
  • Instill understanding and appreciation of American democracy in students.
  • Annual Requirements

    Meet the requirements of the State Board of Regents for certification in the area of instruction.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Valid Rhode Island certification PK‑2.
    • Skills essential for implementing a Pre‑K curriculum.
    • Child‑centered educator who continually assesses and refines teaching practices.
    • Ability to conduct ongoing child assessment including observations, work samples, and interviews with children and parents.
    • Engage families in developing a partnership for child learning at home.
    • Knowledge of research and best practices in early childhood development.
    • Understanding of Rhode Island Workforce knowledge and competencies.
    • Experience in Pre‑K (preferred).
    • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood.
    • Certification PK‑2.
    • Interview required.
    • Continued professional development in early childhood education.
    • Three to five years of teaching experience (required).
    • Early Childhood/Special Ed. certification preferred.
