Youth Development
PVD Promise is a data- and community-driven nonprofit helping Providence Public and Charter School students access higher education. PVD Promise serves 1,250+ students from 700 families — 90% low-income and 97% students of color — by helping families open 529 College Savings Accounts, providing seed deposits and monthly incentives, and offering bilingual family and youth engagement programming, all at no cost.
PVD Promise seeks a full-time Ameri Corps VISTA to expand capacity within its Youth Engagement Program, specifically its Mentorship Program, which currently serves 30+ middle and high school students through one-on-one mentoring, a college-going curriculum, weekly mentor meetings, college visits, and community events. PVD Promise is the only program in Rhode Island offering college access services starting as early as birth.
The VISTA will build a sustainable mentor recruitment pipeline through outreach to colleges, universities, and community partners, and develop systems to cultivate and retain mentors year over year. To strengthen quality, the member will refine the mentorship curriculum, develop a hybrid mentor orientation/training process, build a centralized resource database, and identify student incentives that boost engagement.
A key focus is evaluation: the VISTA will design systems to assess mentor participation, mentee engagement, and program impact, including evaluation tools, feedback surveys, and outcome tracking, while streamlining communication between mentors, students, and families.
The VISTA will also support broader Youth Engagement initiatives, including the research, planning and material creation required for youth workshops and social-emotional learning opportunities — building the infrastructure PVD Promise needs to sustainably expand mentorship and college readiness support for Providence's historically underserved students.
