Job Description

7 hours/day

Duties & Requirements
  • Work directly with students/groups of students in person.
  • Work directly with medically fragile and high‑needs students.
  • Display a level of confidence and authority to students.
  • Display professional behavior at all times.
  • Be flexible and able to change gears at a moment’s notice.
  • Have an open mind and sense of humor.
  • Handle conflict.
  • Attend all required training.
  • Work with high‑needs students to promote success within the school setting.
  • Develop a working knowledge of the students with whom you are working.
  • Enthusiastically acknowledge student success.
  • Develop a positive working relationship with the student while retaining professionalism as a staff member.
  • Provide positive feedback when a student is behaving appropriately.
  • Redirect a student when necessary to keep them on task.
  • Work with the student within the parameters of an individualized education plan.
  • Monitor and supervise students throughout the school day.
  • Perform various other duties including supervision and escorting students between classes when necessary.
  • Keep in contact with the regular education teacher; act as liaison between the special education teacher and regular classroom teacher when appropriate.
  • Work with all students in the classroom, giving priority to assigned students.
  • Be willing and able to teach small groups of students as instructed by the teacher.
  • Maintain a log of activities that take place throughout the day and chart student behavior as instructed by the special education teacher.
  • Anticipate teacher and/or student needs, and work independently in meeting those needs.
  • Excellent attendance and punctuality required.
  • Training in behavior management preferred.
  • Work collaboratively as a team.
  • Previous successful work with children with behavioral challenges preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to regularly walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, and pull.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors; inclement weather at times.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Mandatory Conditions of Employment
  • Proof of high school diploma, or equivalent.
  • Proof (within 60 days following hire date) of one of the following:
    • An AA degree from an accredited college or university.
    • A minimum of 72 college quarter credits.
    • Passed a district‑recognized assessment of basic skills and instructional proficiency (currently the ETS test).
  • Completion of special education training, including any medical training provided by Special Education.
  • Completion of 14 hours of Fundamental Course of Study/General Para educator Certificate training as provided and directed by the District (OSPI and PESB requirement).
  • Successful clearance of the FBI and Washington State Patrol fingerprint background check.
  • Successful Washington State Sexual Misconduct clearance.
  • Completion of federal I‑9 form.
