Job DescriptionThe instructional coach will use the practices for Student‑Centered Coaching to provide support to teachers across grade levels and subjects. Coaching will be driven by student outcomes and will lead to the implementation of effective instructional practices in the classroom. The coach will work to bring evidence‑based practices into classrooms by working with teachers and other school leaders individually and collectively.
The coach will attend and present professional development to enhance knowledge of pedagogy and content with the goal of improving instructional practice, student learning and outcomes.
- Work with teachers to ensure the alignment of their instruction to the appropriate standards, curriculum and assessments.
- Work with the principal to develop a schedule that maximizes coaching time and impact on student learning and outcomes.
- Use student evidence when co‑planning lessons with teachers.
- Facilitate Student‑Centered Coaching cycles across grade levels and disciplines.
- Collaborate with teachers to design and use formative assessments.
- Create opportunities for discourse among teachers and students.
- Work with teachers to ensure student ownership, engagement, and choice.
- Work to build teacher capacity to implement effective instructional practices to improve student learning and performance in the general classroom.
- Provide informal support to teachers in the areas of classroom management, curriculum design, or other expressed needs.
- Collaborate with teachers to create a culture of rigor, inquiry, and reflection by probing ideas and further pressing students to explore their intellect.
- Collaborate with the principal to build a culture for coaching.
- Build trusting, respectful, and professional relationships with teachers.
- Model being a reflective practitioner and support others to reflect as well.
- Plan and provide professional development by collaboratively shaping, providing and participating in school professional development for coaches provided by the District.
- Collaborate with principal, administrative team, and other appropriate staff in the school by meeting regularly to provide updates on Student‑Centered Coaching work and to assess the school’s progress in improving instructional practices, student learning and outcomes.
- Assist principal and administrative team in identifying areas of professional development needs.
- Assist in making available the resources teachers need to implement the curriculum.
- Assist grade level teams or teachers in the interpretation of test results to inform instruction and to deepen curriculum knowledge and solve instructional challenges.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the superintendent or his/her designee.
- Appropriate certification of grade and/or content
- Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university required
- Additional literacy and innumeracy courses preferred
- Such alternatives to the above qualification as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret textbooks, periodicals, professional journals.
- Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, parents and colleagues.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
