Overview

Consultant Ecologist Job Description

J Taylor Ecology Consulting is a small but highly focused consultancy based in Hampshire, providing ecological expertise for military and railway infrastructure, solar farm initiatives, and residential developments.

Salary: £30,000 – £35,0000 pro rata

Location:

Homebased - Projects across the UK, mainly Hampshire Wiltshire and South of England

Working hours:

Part time 3 to 4 days a week. Flexible working (term time/school hours considered)

Responsibilities

We will give you the freedom to manage projects end‑to‑end in a supportive environment. You’ll lead surveys, assessments and reporting.

  • Deliver Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and Ecological Impact Assessments.
  • Undertake protected and priority species surveys, particularly bat PRA and emergence surveys.
  • Prepare quotations and survey designs.
  • Lead field teams and manage projects from start to finish.

Travel and (very) occasional overnight stays are part of the role, but we balance this with clear limits on nights away and flexible working to protect your work‑life balance.

Essential Skills
  • Level 1 Bat Survey licence
  • Enthusiasm for ecology and conservation
  • Experience in habitat surveys (UKHabs/NVC) and/or protected species surveys
  • Strong report writing and communication skills
  • Ability to lead teams and work independently
  • Full driving licence and access to a car
Desirable
  • Level 2 Bat Survey licence
  • Further protected species licence (GCN, dormouse)
  • Advanced expertise in a specialist area
  • CIEEM membership (or eligibility)
  • Degree in ecology or related discipline
  • GIS experience (QGIS/ArcGIS)
  • Mentoring or line management experience
  • Track record securing EPSM bat licences
