Position: Build Operative (Contract)
Build Operative

Pay Rate: £13.00 per hour (rising to £13.45 in April)

Hours:

7:00am - 4:00pm (42.5 hours per week) + one late shift per week

About the Role

We are looking for a hands‑on Build Operative to support fire resistance testing within a specialist laboratory environment. This role is ideal for candidates from a labouring, joinery, carpentry, fabrication, construction, or workshop background who enjoy practical work, using tools, and following clear instructions.

You will be involved in preparing, installing, and dismantling test specimens, setting up equipment, and supporting the safe running of fire resistance tests in line with British and European standards.

Full training is provided - no previous fire testing experience required.

Key Responsibilities

Install and prepare test specimens following clear written instructions
Use tools and basic instrumentation to set up testing equipment
Support the running of fire resistance tests using specialist furnace equipment
Record measurements accurately
Assist in building supporting constructions as required
Dismantle and dispose of test materials after testing
Keep the laboratory clean, tidy, and organised
Carry out general operative duties as needed

Essential Skills & Experience

Practical, hands‑on problem‑solving skills
Ability to follow instructions accurately
Good communication skills

Experience with manual handling or physical work
Awareness of Health & Safety
Good organisation and attention to detail
Basic Microsoft Office knowledge (training provided)

Desirable

Experience in construction, joinery, fabrication, or workshop roles
Experience in a laboratory or testing environment
HND or equivalent in a technical or engineering discipline
Understanding of basic measurement or instrumentation
Familiarity with construction processes

Personal Qualities

Reliable, proactive, and highly motivated
Enjoys practical work and working with tools
Detail‑focused and committed to accuracy
Good communicator (internal and external)
Comfortable working to deadlines
Team player with a positive attitude
