TITLE: Highly Qualified Instructional Assistant:
Multilingual Learners
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Meets MSDE standards of Highly Qualified by possessing an Associate's Degree, 48 college credits, or successful completion of state/local assessment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents (using appropriate grammar) in both oral or written form. Proficiency in both English and Spanish preferred.
- Ability to maintain students' discipline in a variety of school/program settings.
- Ability to use a computer.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: School Manager, Principal, or Assistant Principal
JOB GOAL: To assist Multilingual Learner (ML) students in learning English and improving their proficiency in applying English language skills in academic and related arts curriculum areas, under the collaborative guidance of the ML and content teachers.
ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supports ML students’ access to instructional programming by providing supplemental English acquisition and academic services.
- Provide individual and/or small group supplementary instruction to ML students based on individualized instructional plans.
- Assists teacher in preparing room for school, preparing and distributing lesson materials, arranging bulletin boards, and retrieving and storing materials.
- Instructs students under a teacher’s direct supervision or more independently under the direction of school administrators.
- Keeps classroom and/or work areas neat and orderly.
- Supervises students in playgrounds, cafeteria, bus stop areas.
- Assists in the maintenance of student records.
- Instructs and assists students in computer related programs and activities; depending upon specific assignment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Non-exempt position. Ten month work year.
Salary to be established by the Board.
