Job Summary

Under the direct supervision and delegation of a Registered Nurse, participates in the nursing process by providing supportive patient care to patients and their families. Assists with delegated direct care activities as required for daily operations on the assigned unit and performs functions consistent with the individual’s level of education, clinical competencies, and organizational policies. Performance of job duties requires authorized access to medication storage areas and the ability to transport medications to and from designated medication storage and delivery locations in accordance with institutional policy.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the registered nurse with patient assessment by monitoring parameters as delegated and reporting findings in accordance with Nursing Standards of Practice and institutional policy.
  • Assist the registered nurse in planning nursing care by contributing observations related to patient status and response to prior treatments or nursing interventions.
  • Assist with the implementation of nursing care by performing delegated nursing activities under RN supervision, including but not limited to:
    • Assisting with nasogastric irrigations and nasogastric or gastrostomy feedings when permitted.
    • Assisting with indwelling and intermittent urinary bladder catheterization, catheter care, and removal when authorized.
  • Perform unit‑specific procedures such as dressing changes and calculating intake and output totals.
  • Provide direct patient care including hygiene, positioning, ambulation, transfers, feeding, and bed‑making.
  • Assist with patient admissions, discharges, and setup of special equipment, and assist with medical device care (braces, collars, splints, compression devices, etc.).
  • Assist in evaluation of nursing care by promptly reporting patient responses to nursing interventions, including pain management, vital signs, and elimination patterns.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age‑appropriate care, applying principles of growth and development under the guidance of the registered nurse and in accordance with unit policies.
  • Document delegated patient care activities accurately and timely in accordance with Nursing Documentation Policy.
  • Perform CPR as indicated and in accordance with current certification and institutional guidelines.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control standards.
  • Follow all institutional and unit policies to promote patient safety.
  • Perform general support activities for the unit, including running errands, obtaining supplies and equipment, and relaying messages as appropriate.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, families, visitors, and healthcare team members while maintaining confidentiality and complying with privacy regulations.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience – Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Currently enrolled in good academic standing in an accredited pre‑licensure MSN, BSN or ADN program.
  • Passing grade (“C” or better) in Fundamentals/Foundations of Nursing (transcript required).
  • Current BLS card (AHA or American Red Cross) required.
Education & Experience – Preferred
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificate.
  • Previous experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and adherence to universal blood and body fluid precautions, standard precautions, and basic aseptic technique in accordance with institutional infection control policies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and basic skills necessary to assist in providing appropriate care to patients on the assigned unit, applying principles of growth and development across the lifespan when observing patient needs and reporting relevant findings to the registered nurse.
  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to establish positive interpersonal relationships when interacting with patients, families, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team while maintaining confidentiality and professional behavior.
