Summary

Join the Talbot County Roads Team and get to work outside in the fresh air in the beautiful landscape of Talbot County. The Roads Maintenance Worker reports to the Superintendent of Roads and County Facilities and performs duties to maintain the Talbot County roads and rights-of-ways which includes operating equipment and performing physical labor.

The Talbot County Roads Department responds to all aspects of programmed and routine maintenance, in all weather conditions, as well as emergency operations for approximately 370 miles of County owned roads and rights-of-way.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy trucks or appropriate construction and maintenance equipment (i.e.: backhoe, front-end loader, tractor mower, A-boom mower, wood chipper, tractor broom, tractor with ditching attachment, belt loader, pneumatic tire and steel wheeled rollers, asphalt paver, bucket truck, etc.) to maintain County-owned roads, bridges and rights-of-way.
  • Exercise judgement for the safe operation of all types of automotive and equipment assigned.
  • Maintains the appearance of equipment by removing dust and road soils, cleaning windshields, cleaning equipment tracks, washing and steaming equipment.
  • Patches and resurfaces roads
  • Maintains drainage structures.
  • Loads, transports and unloads equipment, supplies and materials.
  • Repairs, paints and maintains structures located at the Roads Facility.
  • Picks up trash and debris from roadways, right-of-way areas and Roads Facility yard and related grounds.
  • Assists in the installation and maintenance of road signs.
  • Mows grass.
  • Flags traffic.
  • Uses a variety of hand and power tools such as sledges, hammers, wrenches, brooms, shovels, picks, hand tamps, saws, drills, sprayers, post hole diggers, etc.
  • Maintains and cleans hand tools, power tools, vehicles and equipment.
  • Cleans buildings, shop areas, grounds, vehicles, related tools and equipment.
  • Must have the ability to work with the Roads Department any hours needed during summer and winter storm activity. In case of such an emergency, the Roads Department may be on active duty 24/7 and attendance will be required.
  • Other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of high school equivalence. Applicants must be able to perform heavy physical labor outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Ability to learn basic highway maintenance work techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to understand written and oral instructions, and to keep simple records of daily activities on timecard.
  • Ability to maintain the appearance of equipment and to perform minor maintenance functions.
  • Ability to perform, under supervision, other related roadway and bridge maintenance functions.
  • Ability to work after normal business hours during adverse weather conditions.
  • Possession of a current, valid Maryland Commercial Drivers License, Class B or higher, or have ability to obtain such within one year of employment, as well as possess knowledge of traffic regulations of the State of Maryland for the operation of commercial and non-commercial vehicles.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor outdoors in any type of extreme weather and environmental conditions (including dust).
  • Possess a good work ethic and positive attitude.

  • Performs heavy physical labor, lifting objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • May need to bend, squat, crouch, climb and/or move on uneven surfaces.
  • May need to stand for long periods of time.
Work Environment

The employee routinely works with and around heavy equipment such as heavy trucks, construction and maintenance equipment.

The employee may occasionally be exposed to dust and noise and will work in all types of weather conditions including heat, snow, ice, flooding, etc. and may work extended hours during adverse weather conditions until the conclusion of the event.

The noise level can be moderate to extremely load.
