General Summary:
The integrated engineering co-op/intern supports the Product Engineering team with designing, building, testing, and improving mechanical and electrical parts and subassemblies used in new and existing products. The role provides hands-on experience with prototyping, test execution, data analysis, and troubleshooting under the guidance of experienced engineers. Interns contribute to real project work – ranging from existing product improvements to product performance validation – while learning how engineering principles are applied in a fast-paced development environment.
This position offers students an opportunity to develop practical engineering skills, explore career pathways, and meaningfully impact active technical product development.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist with mechanical and electrical design activities by creating or updating CAD models, component drawings, simple circuit schematics, wiring diagrams, and test fixtures.
- Support prototyping and build activities, including design, 3D printing and assembly of mechanical components, creating, wiring and soldering circuits, preparing test samples, and documenting build configurations.
- Execute product and component testing by setting up equipment, running test procedures, collecting measurement data, and troubleshooting issues under engineer guidance.
- Perform research and data analysis to support design decisions – such as benchmarking components, analyzing test results, reviewing supplier specifications, or exploring alternative design approaches.
- Support engineering documentation and project communication, including updating BOMs, creating test reports, organizing drawing revisions, and preparing slide summaries for cross-functional reviews.
- Collaborate with engineers across disciplines to coordinate tasks, clarify requirements, and contribute to team discussions during design reviews or weekly project meetings.
Job Specifications:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering at Lafayette College.
- Basic proficiency with CAD tools (e.g., Solid Works, Creo, or Onshape) for creating or modifying simple models, drawings, or assemblies.
- Foundational understanding of circuit design and electronics, such as interpreting schematics, basic wiring, component selection, or breadboard-level prototyping.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for data analysis, reporting, and communication.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly document work and collaborate within cross-functional teams.
- Strong problem-solving abilities, with the capability to analyze data, identify trends, and support engineering decision making.
- Eagerness to learn, adaptability to new tasks, and a proactive approach to challenges in a fast-paced engineering environment.
- Ability to present, interpret, and communicate test results, including summarizing findings in reports or presentations.
- Basic proficiency in writing code for embedded systems such (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP
32, etc.)
