Job Description

Middle School Social Studies Teacher who will serve as a highly effective educator committed to accelerating student achievement in a diverse, high‑needs school environment. The candidate will demonstrate the ability to build strong relationships with students and families while implementing rigorous, research‑based instructional practices that significantly improve student learning outcomes.

Job Duties and Responsibilities Instructional Excellence & Student Achievement
  • Plan and deliver standards‑aligned, rigorous instruction that accelerates student growth and closes learning gaps.
  • Establish clear learning targets, success criteria, and measurable outcomes for all lessons.
  • Use differentiated instructional strategies to meet the academic, social‑emotional, cultural, and developmental needs of diverse learners.
  • Implement evidence‑based teaching practices proven to improve student engagement and achievement.
  • Adjust instruction rapidly based on student performance data, formative assessments, and student feedback.
  • Provide targeted intervention and enrichment opportunities to support individual student needs.
  • Ensure students demonstrate measurable academic growth through consistent monitoring and instructional adjustments.
Data‑Driven Decision Making
  • Collect, analyze, and utilize student performance data to identify strengths, gaps, trends, and instructional priorities.
  • Use multiple sources of assessment data, including formative assessments, common assessments, progress monitoring tools, and student work analysis.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to identify students needing additional supports and develop effective intervention plans.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and communicate growth areas with students, families, and support teams.
  • Participate in data cycles, professional learning communities, and continuous improvement processes.
Classroom Culture & Student Relationships
  • Create an inclusive, respectful, and academically focused classroom environment where all students feel valued and capable of success.
  • Build strong relationships with students while maintaining high academic and behavioral expectations.
  • Implement culturally responsive teaching practices that recognize and honor student backgrounds and experiences.
  • Promote student ownership, perseverance, problem‑solving, and responsibility for learning.
  • Utilize positive behavior supports and restorative practices to create a productive learning environment.
Collaboration & Professional Growth
  • Work collaboratively with grade‑level teams, specialists, intervention staff, administrators, and families to improve student outcomes.
  • Engage actively in professional learning focused on improving instructional effectiveness.
  • Reflect on instructional practice and continuously seek ways to improve teaching effectiveness.
  • Support school‑wide improvement initiatives and district priorities.
  • Contribute positively to a culture of collective responsibility for student success.
Family & Community Engagement
  • Develop partnerships with families and caregivers to support student learning and success.
  • Communicate regularly regarding student progress, needs, and opportunities for growth.
  • Encourage family involvement and create meaningful connections between school and community.
Compliance & Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain compliance with Michigan Department of Education requirements, district policies, curriculum expectations, and professional standards.
  • Maintain accurate documentation including lesson plans, grades, attendance, and required student records.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, ethical conduct, and commitment to equity and excellence.
Required Qualifications
  • Valid Michigan teaching certification:
    Social Studies RX 6‑12 or CQ 5‑9
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve student academic outcomes.
  • Strong knowledge of Michigan academic standards and curriculum expectations.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
