Job Overview
Under the supervision of the Advising Supervisor, the College Advisor is a vital contact for all program students, driving engagement and empowering students to achieve their academic and career goals. The Advisor collaborates closely with partners such as Advising Peers, Recruitment, Admissions, Career, Financial Aid, Retention Coaches, Student Life, and faculty to provide coordinated care and academic and non‑academic advice, including program orientations, transcript and course placement evaluations, approval of course waivers, and registration support throughout the student’s academic career.
The College Advisor engages in proactive advising and coaching strategies throughout the academic year, builds transformative relationships, interprets program procedures, monitors academic progression, and plays a pivotal role in promoting student success to ensure students reach key benchmarks.
Responsibilities- Student Advising
:
Perform comprehensive academic advising, present group workshops, provide individual advising sessions with minimum contacts at critical semester periods, assess GPA and transcript, teach course registration aligned with program goals, advise on academic decisions and career development, and clarify planning documents. - Education Planning Leadership
:
Assess student strengths and weaknesses, examine alternatives based on goals and progress, interpret non‑cognitive assessments, guide realistic academic and career goals, stay current on transfer policies, and inform financial aid recommendations. - Academic Monitoring, Success Planning, & Coaching Support
:
Identify strengths and barriers, support goal setting, monitor academic plans, address study skills and tutoring needs, provide coaching, deliver proactive outreach, and use data to identify retention risks and implement targeted strategies. - Career Exploration
:
Incorporate career interventions, provide general career information, align academic and employment goals, and refer students to the Career Hub. - Resource Guidance
:
Identify and refer students to additional academic, career, personal, financial counseling, or special needs resources, guide portal navigation, and maintain accurate student reports. - Data and Reporting
:
Use EAB Navigate and Ellucian tools to identify students benefiting from services, participate in re‑enrollment campaigns, and generate accurate student reports. - Customer Service and Engagement
:
Deliver excellent customer service via face‑to‑face, telephone, online, and web conferencing, collaborate on orientation and workshop planning, and facilitate group advising sessions. - Ethics and Confidentiality
:
Maintain honesty, adhere to ethical principles, and handle confidential information with respect. - Continuous Learning & Professional Development
:
Stay current on best practices, participate in trainings, workshops, and professional associations, and promote continuous learning in the College Advising center. - Other Duties
:
Perform additional related tasks to support efficient operation and institutional objectives.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher
- At least two (2) years of related experience in higher education advising, success coaching, or student services, with broad knowledge of academic programs and student needs.
Master’s degree and two years of related experience, including experience in a Guided Pathways environment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Knowledge of academic advising and career development practices.
- Knowledge of admissions, enrollment, registration procedures, and student support services.
- Knowledge of MATC programs of study, general education requirements, and articulation agreements.
- Knowledge of workforce education trends and career options.
- Knowledge of College organization, strategic goals, and policies.
- Flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends.
- Ability to identify and connect students with community resources.
- Ability to coordinate events among multiple teams.
- Active listening, questioning, and effective conversation skills.
