The Surgical Specialties Med Surg unit is located on the 4 South wing of the hospital. This 19‑bed unit focuses on urology, gastrointestinal, vascular, wound care, pediatrics, orthopedics, and trauma. The position provides an opportunity to work with a diverse set of cases and to leverage a broad skill set.

Schedule

Minimum requirement: 2 shifts per month, including at least one weekend shift when available and one holiday shift. $8.75 PRN differential in addition to the base wage.

Job Summary

Provides direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols of the healthcare organization.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Use standards of medical‑surgical nursing practice to improve the quality of care and quality of life for patients, families, and significant others.
  • Establish effective relationships and serve as an advocate for patients, families, and significant others to facilitate the development of individualized care plans.
  • Apply the nursing process to develop and implement care plans, collect assessment data, determine nursing diagnoses, identify expected outcomes, execute interventions, and evaluate patient outcomes.
  • Develop assessment and management strategies addressing physical, functional, cultural, social, economic, developmental, spiritual, vocational, and leisure dimensions of patient responses.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the impact of illness and each patient’s status across multiple dimensions.
  • Use leadership skills to coordinate and collaborate with patients, families, significant others, communities, and interprofessional team members.
  • Communicate effectively to participate in collaborative decision making that respects cultural sensitivity, ethics, legality, holism, informed choice, compassion, and available resources.
  • Educate patients, families, and significant others about activities that promote health, maintain health, or promote comfort.
  • Serve as a mentor and role model, fostering a healthy work environment within the practice setting and profession.
  • Apply evidence‑based practice and scientific knowledge in medical‑surgical nursing practice.
  • Maintain a state of alertness and safety at all times.
  • Perform point‑of‑care testing as per policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school or equivalent education for licensing.
Experience
  • No prior experience required; on‑the‑job training provided.
Physical Requirements
  • Constant use of speech to communicate orally.
  • Constant standing, walking, frequent lifting/carrying of 0-25 lbs, frequent sitting, reaching, and keyboard use.
  • Frequent use of vision for near and far distances and for color discrimination, use of smell to detect odors, and use of hearing for oral communication, alarms, and machinery.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying of 25-50 lbs, occasional patient handling, occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, gripping, repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements, occasional driving, and rare crawling or running.
Required Licenses and Certifications
  • State of Illinois:
    Basic Life Support (BLS) HCP – American Heart Association;
    Registered Professional Nurse (RN) – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
  • State of Missouri: BLS HCP – American Heart Association;
    Registered Nurse (RN) – Missouri Division of Professional Registration or RN issued by Compact State.
  • State of Oklahoma: BLS HCP – American Heart Association; RN issued by Compact State or RN – Oklahoma Board of Nursing.
  • State of Wisconsin: BLS HCP – American Heart Association; RN issued by Compact State or RN – Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services.
Shift and Employment

Variable shift; employee. Scheduled weekly hours: 0.
