Security Monitor

The L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in downtown Eau Claire, Wisconsin is proud of its mission to promote lifelong learning, create collaborative spaces, and support open access to diverse materials and resources. We're looking for someone to join our Library team in creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for library customers and staff. The Security Monitor plays a key role in maintaining security throughout the library and grounds, responding to incidents and emergencies, monitoring facility activity, and enforcing library policies with professionalism and compassion.

Throughout the day, you'll maintain a visible presence, monitor security cameras, greet customers, answer questions, and provide support and training to library staff. The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys working with people and can remain calm under pressure, has strong observation, decision-making, and problem solving skills. This position requires strong customer service, communication, and deescalation skills, along with the ability to work collaboratively with staff and community partners.

Bilingual candidates, especially those who speak HMoob (Hmong), Spanish, or other high-needs languages are encouraged to apply. This is a full time, non-exempt position, 40 hours per week. The starting wage is $25.95 per hour. The proposed schedule includes primarily daytime hours, with occasional evening and weekend shifts when needed. Under general supervision, this position exists to help ensure the safety and security of the library's building and grounds for use by staff and customers. The security monitor actively engages with visitors and staff to create a welcoming and respectful environment and ensure compliance with the library's rules of behavior.

Relevant Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Course work in criminal justice or related field preferred. Customer service experience preferred.

  • Maintains an alert and visible presence by regularly monitoring all areas of building and grounds.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly public space within the library building and grounds.
  • Contributes to a positive, team-oriented work environment by being helpful, respectful, and approachable to both staff and the public.
  • Explains rules and procedures to customers to solicit cooperation and compliance.
  • Balance security authority with keeping the public building friendly and welcoming.
  • Responds to staff calls for assistance, emergencies, and incidents promptly.
  • Advises customers of inappropriate behaviors that may lead to loss of privileges in a proactive and compassionate manner.
  • Responds to security or emergency situations directly or by contacting appropriate staff, law enforcement, or other emergency personnel as necessary.
