HIGHWAY LABORER/OPERATOR/PATROLPERSON - WEST BEND

The Washington County Highway Department has facilities in West Bend and Slinger and is currently recruiting a dedicated full-time Highway Laborer. This position is located in our West Bend Shop, 900 Lang St, West Bend. The Highway Department is responsible for the maintenance of approximately 515 lane miles of State Trunk Highway under the direction of the State and the maintenance and construction of approximately 390 lane miles of County Trunk Highway.

Under the general supervision of the Patrol Superintendent, the Highway Laborer performs skilled and semi-skilled work involving maintenance, construction and repair of highways, roads, bridges and roadsides. Duties include patrolling highways and roads, removing debris and obstructions, mowing grass and weeds along roadsides, and operating equipment for snow removal, salting under icy conditions.

Winter hours for the role (mid-October to mid-April)
  • 1st Shift: 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM – (Monday – Friday)
  • 2nd Shift: 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM – (Monday – Friday) 3 year position commitment
  • 3rd Shift: 10:45 PM to 6:45 AM – (Sunday – Thursday) 3 year position commitment
Summer hours for the role (mid-April to mid-October)
  • 1st Shift: 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM – (Monday - Thursday; off on Fridays)

Qualified Candidate must possess:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency
  • A valid Wisconsin driver’s license with a clear driving record for the past three years.
  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin Class A Commercial Driver’s License (manual transmission) with air brake and “N” endorsement, or the ability to obtain within six months (or within a timeframe determined by the department based on seasonal needs).
  • Two to three years of full time recent paid work experience in the maintenance and repair of roads, including the operation of construction equipment is preferred.
  • Must have the ability to perform strenuous and heavy manual duties.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test.
Typical starting hourly rate is $28.90 per hour with Class A CDL.
