Bihar Staff Selection Commission (BSSC) has released the Stenographer recruitment notification on its official website, along with the syllabus and exam pattern PDF. If you are willing to be appointed as a Stenographer in that department of Bihar, you should know the BSSC Stenographer Syllabus and Exam Pattern 2025 in detail. Without a clear understanding of the syllabus and exam pattern, you cannot start your preparation.

Every year, a large number of candidates apply, but only a few are selected due to limited seats. The exam process includes a Written Test and a Practical Test. This article covers the BSSC Stenographer Syllabus, Exam Pattern (Topic-Wise and Subject-Wise), recommended books, and self-preparation strategies for 2025.

There are two stages: a Written Test and a Practical Test. The written test comprises 150 questions for 600 marks, with a time limit of 2 hours 15 minutes. Each correct answer earns 4 marks, and each wrong answer deducts 1 mark.

The second stage is the Practical Test, where you must demonstrate Hindi typing speed and shorthand skills. The number of vacancies is 432.

The written exam has three sections of equal weightage. Each section has 50 questions and 200 marks, totaling 150 questions and 600 marks. Time allowed: 2 hours 15 minutes. Negative marking: 1 mark per wrong answer. Sections are:
General Knowledge, General Science & Mathematics, and Reasoning, Logic, Comprehension & Mental Ability.

The written exam tests General Studies, Science, Mathematics, Reasoning, and Comprehension, focusing on India, Bihar, and basic concepts. After the written part, a Hindi typing and shorthand practical is conducted. Daily practice in typing and shorthand is essential.

• Indian History and History of Bihar: Ancient, Medieval, Modern India; important kings and dynasties; revolts and reforms; history of Bihar and its contributions.
• Indian Policy and Economy (with Bihar focus): Constitution features, governance structure, policies and schemes related to Bihar, and basic Indian economy concepts.
• Rivers and Geography of India (especially Bihar): Physical features, major rivers, geography of Bihar, natural resources, environment.
• Indian National Movement and Bihar’s Contribution: Major freedom movements and Bihar’s role and leaders.

General Science: Physics (motion, force, energy, electricity, magnetism, light, sound), Chemistry (elements, compounds, reactions, environmental chemistry), Biology (human body, cells, genetics, nutrition), Environment (ecosystems, pollution, climate change).

Mathematics: Statistics, Vectors, Differentiation & Integrals, Sets & Relations, Quadratic Equations, Logarithms, Probability, Trigonometry, Matrices & Determinants, Conic Sections, Sequences & Series, 3D Geometry, Coordinate Geometry, Arithmetic & Algebra basics.

Comprehension: Reading passages and answering questions to demonstrate understanding.

Logical Reasoning: Series, puzzles, coding-decoding, statements and assumptions, seating arrangements, Venn diagrams, deducing conclusions.

Mental Ability: Visualization, arithmetic reasoning, problem solving, identifying similarities and differences, decision making.

The practical test evaluates Hindi typing and shorthand. Dictation is at 80 words per minute for 4 minutes, followed by 20 minutes to type with a maximum of 10% mistakes. Hindi typing requires 300 words in 10 minutes at 30 words per minute with up to 1.5% mistakes. Daily practice in shorthand and typing is essential for speed and accuracy.
