This job, with minimal supervision, is responsible to design and develop highly complex product and component concepts for release to production in a manner to ensure superior performance, quality, manufacturing, and cost requirements for standard or custom products.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/RESULTS
- Conceives highly complex product design concepts and prepares design models using Creo Parametric
- Work with engineers and project leaders to understand new product concepts and design requirements, making suggestions for improvement and enhancements, as necessary.
- Utilize expertise in Creo Parametric to create accurate component, assembly, and system drawings and models.
- Ensure designs meet performance, manufacturing, quality, and cost requirements and conform to design engineering best practices.
- Creates and maintains accurate models and drawings in accordance with Starkey's documentation control standards.
- Create accurate and up-to-date documentation using Starkey's documentation procedures.
- Create accurate CAD models and drawings which communicate the design intent and ensure a high standard of quality.
- Create Engineering Change Requests (CR's) for release.
- Review and integrate models and drawings provided by suppliers and other cross-functional team members.
- Interface with key suppliers on co-development projects.
- Coordinate and integrate designs from suppliers and modify, as necessary.
- Accept feedback and design improvement recommendations from Continuation Engineering and other internal departments.
- Assist in continuous improvement initiatives related to Mechanical Engineering.
- Generate process improvement ideas and actively participate in continuous improvement projects.
- Perform design verification testing to ensure that all criteria are met.
- Specify design verification testing to ensure that products meet quality and reliability requirements
- Support design validation testing of all new parts and assemblies.
- Aid prototype and production debugging efforts to ensure that design intent is met, and parts are acceptable for form, fit and function.
- Ensure product quality by evaluating and dispositioning First Article Inspection data.
- Provide input into project planning and management to ensure that project schedules are met, and areas of high risk addressed.
- Coordinate and lead design reviews as required.
- Determine mechanical design tasks and provide input into project timelines and schedules.
- Provide project status updates at team meetings as required.
- Collaborate with other cross-functional team members to create and maintain DFMEA documentation which ensures that all key areas of potential failure have been considered and addressed.
JOB REQUIREMENTS Education
- Associate degree in Mechanical Design & Drafting required.
Experience
- 10+ yrs. experience in mechanical design required, hearing or medical device industry experience preferred.
Knowledge / Technical Requirements
- Advanced knowledge of GD&T standards required.
- Advanced knowledge of injection molded processes required
- Advanced knowledge of injection molded plastic, stamped metal, and elastomeric product design required.
- Basic knowledge of acoustics and vibration is highly desirable.
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of product development best practices (i.e., DFM, DOE, DFMEA, FEA, Lean PD, etc.)
Competencies, Skills & Abilities
- Advanced skills in Creo Parametric 3D design software with a minimum of 2,000 hours on Creo Parametric E required.
- Advanced skills in surfacing required
- Proven ability to work well in a team environment
- Utilize 3D printing to advance design developments
- Ability to work independently to make decisions and report progress.
- Personal communication and conduct skills at a professional level.
- Ability to perform basic engineering calculations and analysis desired including geometry, trigonometry, and strength of material calculations.
