Job DescriptionJOB DESCRIPTION OF THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR
Reports To: Principal and/or Counseling Supervisor or Coordinator of Virtual Learning (if assigned to the Virtual Learning Program)
Supervises: May coordinate and direct activities of counselor aides and clerical assistants.
Purpose: To help all students develop skills in the areas of personal‑social growth, educational planning, and career and vocational development.
Responsibilities- Establish and develop the school‑counseling program and evaluate its effectiveness.
- Coordinate and direct activities of counselor aides and clerical assistants.
- Provide individual and group counseling services to meet developmental, preventive, and remedial needs.
- Consult with students, parents, teachers, and community personnel.
- Coordinate all counseling services and assist with implementation of student services.
- Assist teachers with the Guidance Curriculum and educational placement of students using assessment strategies.
- Adhere to ethical standards and school laws, policies and procedures.
- Participate in professional associations and continue professional development.
- Use the Guilford County Schools Learning Management System for online courses and attend professional development training for system proficiency.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field with a Master’s degree in counseling or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Must be licensed by the State of North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in counseling or able to obtain licensure.
- Operate various equipment such as computers, typewriters, copiers, calculators.
- Exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally.
- Light work involves walking or standing to a significant degree.
- General knowledge of ethical guidelines and applicable laws and regulations.
- General knowledge of organization and administration principles.
- General knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
- Counseling and motivating students.
- Plan, coordinate, and evaluate student programs.
- Coordinate support services personnel and outside agencies.
- Use office machines and common computer applications.
- Maintain complete records and statistics, develop reports.
- Express ideas orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
