Electrical Engineer II

This role focuses on supporting research and development activities at a technology center, with an emphasis on advanced marine electronics and electro-mechanical systems. The Electrical Engineer II defines and designs electrical systems, panels, and wiring harnesses, and works closely with cross-functional design teams to translate project requirements into robust, compliant, and manufacturable solutions. The position calls for strong problem-solving abilities, excellent documentation and communication skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, innovation-driven environment.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with design and project teams to define project and product feature requirements and translate them into detailed electrical system specifications.
  • Define requirements and component specifications for electrical panels, wiring harnesses, and complete electrical systems.
  • Design main, distribution, switch, and instrument panels for AC and DC electrical systems used in marine applications.
  • Ensure that components and systems comply with relevant industry standards and acquire necessary compliance documentation.
  • Conceive and develop new electrical and electronic system designs that enhance customer convenience and improve manufacturability and production labor efficiency.
  • Conduct product research on electrical and electronic equipment and components to support new designs and improvements.
  • Interface with propulsion and project groups to develop optimal system layouts and integration strategies.
  • Develop electrical systems, harness routing, and panel layouts in a 3D CAD environment prior to physical build.
  • Generate detailed engineering drawings for new designs and review and approve all electrical prints for product release.
  • Create and validate load calculations for AC and DC electrical systems in accordance with ABYC, ISO, CE, and Australian standards.
  • Develop and integrate new electrical and electronic technologies, including multiplexing, telematics, satellite communication systems, and integrated dash electronics.
  • Determine shore power configurations and generator sizing requirements (including 120 V, 240 V, 50/60 Hz considerations).
  • Determine grounding and galvanic protection requirements for AC and DC electrical systems.
  • Determine battery capacity and charging system requirements for DC electrical systems.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to project groups and ensure consistency in electrical documentation, methods, and practices across teams.
  • Support manufacturing and customer service teams by troubleshooting and resolving electrical issues related to production and fielded products.
  • Generate and manage Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) as required to document design changes and updates.
  • Build or rework prototype and production wiring harnesses when needed to support development and validation activities.
  • Perform incoming inspections on electrical components, panels, and harnesses to verify quality and compliance with specifications.
  • Install, test, and troubleshoot AC and DC electrical circuits, components, and systems to ensure proper operation and performance.
  • Review and approve owner's manuals for accurate and complete electrical system descriptions and information.
  • Participate in design meetings, present technical findings, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support supplier development activities related to electrical components and systems.
Essential Skills
  • Proven experience in electrical engineering with a focus on electrical design for complex systems.
  • Hands-on experience with the design of electrical systems, including panels and wiring harnesses.
  • Ability to build and rework prototype and production wiring harnesses.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD tools for electrical system development, such as Siemens NX, Solid Works, CATIA, or Pro/ENGINEER (Creo).
  • Strong understanding of AC and DC electrical systems, including load calculations and system sizing.
  • Knowledge of industry standards for marine or similar electrical systems, including ABYC, ISO, CE, and Australian standards.
  • Ability to design main, distribution, switch, and instrument panels for AC and DC systems.
  • Experience installing, testing, and troubleshooting AC/DC electrical circuits, components, and systems.
  • Strong documentation skills, including generating engineering drawings, electrical prints, and ECNs.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with design teams, propulsion groups, project groups, manufacturing, customer service, and suppliers.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills in an R&D or engineering environment.
  • Ability to perform technical reviews of manuals and documentation for accuracy and completeness.
