Responsible for the day to day activities of the phlebotomy team. Performs as a phlebotomist as scheduled and directed by the Phlebotomy Supervisor. Performs all assigned tasks to maintain workflow and effective delivery of phlebotomy services.
Safely and accurately performs venipunctures, arterial and capillary specimen collections as requested in adults, children and infants. Includes interpretation of physician orders and insuring all requests are accurately and completely entered into the information system and perform registration function(s). Completes all required compliance processes.

Job Responsibilities- Coordinates workflow, and schedules, and staffing needs at several locations.
- Uses hospital and laboratory computer systems to obtain information, clarify requests, order and receive specimens to facilitate accurate and timely completion of testing or to obtain vital information. Demonstrates understanding of Laboratory Compliance Plan and procedures.
- Coordinates training personnel to assure technical ability of all those performing phlebotomy. Accurately completes competency checks on staff. Completes training documentation in timely manner. Investigates and resolves problems related to phlebotomy. Safely collects quality samples according to laboratory policies and procedures (for the accurate and timely completion of testing). Performs waived testing (ex. glucose) as required to facilitate appropriate initiation of various lab analyses.
Collects culture specimens as required. - Must have knowledge of collection and ordering requirements for reference labs the Medical Center contracts with to provide drawing service. Demonstrates knowledge of Laboratory Compliance policies and procedures. Has knowledge of specific insurance plans.
- Required to collect specimens at primary location as well as other healthcare facilities as needed.
- Attends in-services and continuing education seminars to enhance personal and professional growth. Assists in the training of new personnel to assure technical ability of all those performing phlebotomy. Accurately completes competency checks on non-certified staff in timely manner. Completes all training documentation.
- Assists in the ordering of supplies for use in specimen collection. Cleans, organizes, and stocks department supplies to maintain a safe and orderly environment.
- Enhances professional growth and development of self, department staff, other hospital personnel, community and students by participation in continuing education, and in-service training and the School of Medical Technology.
- Implements ICARE principles using communication skills and human relations to promote quality patient care and productive working environment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Driver’ License

- At least one year of phlebotomy experience including collections of adults, children, newborns, geriatrics, difficult collections and blood gases.
- Excellent customer service experience
- Demonstrates ability to use Microsoft office tools.
- Demonstrates ability to use PPID collection technology.
- Demonstrates personnel scheduling abilities.
- Experience with Inpatient, Outpatient, and Outreach collections.
- Demonstrates broad understanding of LIS.
- Demonstrates broad understanding of HIS.
- Demonstrates understanding of customer service initiatives.
