The Integration Engineer serves as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for developing, maintaining, and supporting interfaces and integrated solutions with clients. This role is the primary customer contact for HL7, FHIR, and other electronic data interfaces, ensuring seamless data exchange between healthcare applications, systems, and devices using industry standards. The Integration Engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, scalable integration solutions that meet clinical, operational, and financial requirements.

Additionally, the Integration Engineer provides mentorship and guidance to junior Interface Analysts, fostering their growth and ensuring consistency in integration practices across the team.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • HL7 Interface Development: Design, develop and implement HL7-based and FHIR-based integrated solutions, including message parsing, transformation, and routing.
  • Integration Projects: Lead integration projects that connect Electronic Health Records (EHR), Radiology Information Systems (RIS), billing systems and other healthcare applications using HL7, FHIR, APIs and other electronic means.
  • Message Mapping & Transformation: Translate data between disparate systems using HL7 standards (v2.x, CDA, FHIR), ensuring that data is accurately, received, transformed and routed.
  • Revenue Control Management (RCM):
    Understand and support RCM processes, ensuring integration solutions align with financial workflows and compliance requirements.
  • Testing & Validation: Develop and execute test plans for electronic data exchanges, including validation against platform, clinical and billing requirements.
  • Message & System Troubleshooting: Identify, diagnose, and resolve message‑related and engine‑related issues, ensuring minimal downtime and maintaining operational efficiency.
  • Documentation: Document interface specifications and integration workflows to support knowledge sharing and future troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with Stakeholders: Work closely with Clients, Solutions Development, Product Management, Sales and Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) to understand requirements & capabilities to provide optimal integration processes and solutions. Work with Engineering as needed to improve internal systems integration methods, design & develop custom functionality to meet customer needs and to maintain an up‑to‑date understanding of functionality of platform.
  • Compliance & Standards: Stay up to date with HL7/FHIR specifications, healthcare IT standards, radiology and industry best practices (HIPAA, IHE, etc.).
  • Continuous Improvement: Proactively identify opportunities for enhancing our system performance, build processes and scalability of our integration solutions.
Occasional/as‑needed
  • Assist in the administration of the Rhapsody interface engine.
  • Travel may be required on an as‑needed basis to client sites or to vRad’s corporate office.
  • Ability to participate in on‑call rotation to support integration platform.
Qualifications/Education
  • Bachelor of Science in Information Systems/MIS, Computer Science, business or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in implementing and/or supporting HL7, FHIR or EDI interfaces using a 3rd party interface engine, with Rhapsody interface engine preferred.
  • Understanding of application, data, and systems integration.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for communication with client IT leadership and functional business teams.
  • Familiarity with SQL, FHIR, RESTful APIs and RCM processes is a plus/desired.
