Primary Purpose

To provide, along with department members (counselors, financial aid officers, social workers), a proactive developmental guidance and counseling program for all students—including regular education, advanced academics, migrant, special education, and career and technical education—to maximize academic (high school and post‑secondary), career and personal growth.

Qualifications
  • Education/Certification:

    Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling; TEA Counselor certification.
  • Special Knowledge:
    Knowledge of guidance and counseling procedures, student appraisals, career development, graduation plans, post‑secondary education, and curriculum requirements. Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to interact with all students and assist in behavior management when needed. Ability to coordinate campus support operations.
  • Experience:

    Three years of teaching experience required.
Responsibilities
  • Program Management
    • Coordinate activities to educate school staff, parents, and the community about guidance and counseling services via meetings, newsletters, and presentations.
    • Compile, maintain, and file all required reports, records, and documents.
    • Plan, implement, and evaluate developmental guidance and counseling programs.
    • Supervise clerical, paraprofessional, and volunteer personnel.
    • Coordinate academic planning for assigned students on campus.
    • Participate in campus improvement planning with staff, parents, and community members.
    • Coordinate with feeder schools to conduct orientation sessions for smooth high‑school transition.
  • Guidance and Counseling
    • Coordinate and implement the school developmental guidance curriculum, including educational, career, and personal plans.
    • Collaborate with administrators, department heads, social workers, and financial aid officers to disseminate information.
    • Implement group orientation sessions on graduation requirements.
    • Conduct individual student conferences to develop four‑year educational and credit acquisition plans.
    • Arrange and schedule courses to meet graduation requirements and placement needs.
    • Develop graduation lists and identify, recruit, and schedule students into credit‑recovery programs.
    • Provide annual ARD recommendations for special education students.
    • Ensure compliance with graduation eligibility criteria for valedictorian and salutatorian.
    • Assist students with college applications, scholarships, and financial aid information.
    • Develop letters of recommendation for college admissions.
    • Identify students for special programs (e.g., 504, Alternative Education, migrant, teen parent).
    • Counsel students on attendance, behavior, and grades; provide crisis counseling and referrals.
  • Consultation and Coordination
    • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and community personnel to enhance student success.
    • Coordinate resources for special programs and services; implement effective referral processes.
    • Assist with college nights, financial aid nights, parent fairs, graduation ceremonies, and special recognition events.
    • Coordinate parent information sessions on graduation plans, AP program, and testing requirements.
    • Organize parent and teacher conferences and honor assemblies.
  • Assessment
    • Plan and administer End‑of‑Course exams, PSAT, PLAN, AP exams, Credit by Exam programs.
    • Assist with SAT, ACT, Accuplacer, and Quick registration.
    • Interpret and distribute test results to students and parents.
    • Complete behavior evaluation scales for special education referrals and gifted testing as requested.
  • Administration
    • Comply with federal, state, and district guidelines on guidance and counseling.
    • Maintain relationships with supervisors, colleagues, students, and parents.
    • Assist principal with interviewing, selecting, and orienting new staff.
    • Implement graduate identification, reporting, scheduling, and attendance monitoring.
    • Provide documentation for special education reimbursement and local placement policies.
