Scope of Job

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Medicine invites applications for the position of Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs
. This leader will set the strategic vision for faculty affairs, guide all faculty-related matters, and oversee operational functions of the Office of Faculty Affairs. This position reports directly to the Dean of the School of Medicine and collaborates with the faculty affairs unit within Division of Health Affairs.

Position Overview

The Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs provides strategic leadership and oversight of all faculty-related matters at the UTRGV School of Medicine. Independently and in collaboration with other leaders within the school and the division of health affairs, the Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs role includes engagement with and/or oversight of faculty appointments, faculty recruitment and retention, career development, including promotion and tenure processes, faculty-related personnel matters, including annual performance evaluations, professional development programs, well-being efforts, and governance issues and policies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership: Serves on the dean's executive leadership team and collaborates with chairs, other dean leaders, senior administrators, professional staff, division of health affairs and institutional leaders, and practice plan partners to advance the mission of the school of medicine.
  • Faculty Development: Recruitment (in coordination with faculty recruitment), mentorship, evaluation, and promotion of regular and community faculty; fostering a culture of wellness, collaboration, and professional growth.
  • Administration: Financial oversight, budget planning, and resource allocation aligned with school, division and institutional priorities.
  • Strategic Planning: Development and implementation of departmental or division of health affairs strategies consistent with the School of Medicine's mission.
  • Accreditation: Work closely with the assistant dean for accreditation to serve as a resource and in leading efforts among faculty to prepare for the continued successful accreditation of the school of medicine.
  • Representation: Serve as a representative for the school of medicine within the division of health affairs, the institution and at local, regional, state, and national levels.
Additional Responsibilities (UTRGV School of Medicine Standard Expectations for Faculty Affairs)
  • Work closely with chairs to support the management of their faculty, including orienting new faculty.
  • Monitor faculty teaching performance using appropriate systems and work with chairs to enhance performance and develop teaching improvement initiatives such as the teaching med ed certificate program.
  • Work with the Committee on Committees and Faculty Advisory Committee to solicit faculty presentation on key committees.
  • Solicit applications for teaching, research, and other awards.
  • Maintain and update faculty roster and faculty handbook.
  • Attend administrative meetings.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Terminal degree (MD, DO, PhD, EdD or equivalent)
  • Must be qualified to hold an Associate/Professor rank
  • Five (5) years of experience as a faculty member in an academic health center.
  • Leadership experience in academia or healthcare
  • Experience with conflict resolution and critical thinking skills, along with the ability to collaborate and problem-solve within multiple constituencies and across differing levels of organizational complexity.
  • Consistent contributions to education, training, and mentoring of trainees, faculty, or staff
  • Ability to thrive within an evolving hybrid medical school environment committed to education, research, and patient care
