A Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) will assist faculty with lab‑related tasks, provide guidance to students on lab processes, protocols, and safety, and handle laboratory operational needs such as preparation and set‑up. The GTA works under the direct supervision of faculty or staff and follows department schedules.
Responsibilities- Provides general assistance to faculty during instructional activities, including taking attendance and monitoring students.
- Proctors examinations, grades tests, assignments, and post‑lab assessments.
- Facilitates discussion groups and group projects.
- Assists the lab instructor with student support in the lab, including technique demonstration and reinforcing concepts.
- Assists faculty and Lab Manager in lab preparation and clean‑up; prepares chemical solutions, autoclaves equipment, prepares microbiology plates, and gathers materials for BMED labs.
- Enforces laboratory rules and procedures while interacting with students and serves as a positive professional role model.
- Maintains professional interactions with students, staff, faculty, and supervisors.
- Submits biweekly reports to the direct supervisor and attends scheduled meetings.
- Must be admitted to a graduate degree program.
- Must be in good academic standing.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher appropriate to the area of service.
- Registered full‑time for the semester (nine credit hours during fall/spring, three during summer) or fulfill required credit hours.
- Commitment to student learning outcomes and evidence‑based teaching practices.
- Knowledge of higher education teaching principles and practices.
- Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities and time management.
- Skill in planning, organizing, coordinating activities and strong work ethic.
- Ability to establish and maintain a collegial relationship with faculty, staff and students.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Skill in using a personal computer and related software applications.
