A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A HEALTH AND CODE DIRECTOR

As the Assistant Director of Health and Code, you spend your day performing a variety of leadership and technical duties in support of the Health and Code Department. Additionally, your work involves scheduling, assigning and evaluating health, animal care and code enforcement program activities; while managing enforcement field officers and administrative support staff directly. You will work with various municipalities and other public agencies, and complete other duties as required.

You may also assist with planning, directing, managing and overseeing the activities and operations of the department of Health and Code while supervising the work of others and may serve as a lead worker providing direction to others. You will also make recommendations to the Director for updates to existing or enacting new, ordinances for the city that address systemic nuisance problems and seek the City's attorney advice through the Director and input where necessary.

You will also assist in developing goals for the City's Code Enforcement Program that reflects an awareness of private property rights and evaluate effectiveness of work program to accomplish these goals. You enjoy being helpful and have no problem providing assistance and support to other divisions within the department as needed. QUALIFICATIONS

FOR AN ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF HEALTH AND CODE
  • Required

    Education:

    Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Natural/Environmental Sciences, or a related field. Applicants currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in a related field will be considered.
    • Education Preference: Master’s Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Natural/Environmental Sciences, or a related field;
      Registered Sanitarian preferred.
    • Educational Substitute: Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.
  • Required

    Work Experience:

    Requires five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in municipal Code Enforcement, Health/Food Establishment Inspections, Animal Control, public administration, or a related field. Candidates with substantial professional experience in one primary functional area, with demonstrated leadership or supervisory responsibility, may be considered.
    • Experience Preference: Five (5) years’ experience in related fields.
  • Supervisory Experience Requirement: Requires five (3) years of progressive professional experience. Five (3) years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must possess Code Enforcement Officer Certification through TDLR within one year.
  • Must obtain Food Manager Certification through a recognized agency within one year.
  • Must obtain Code Enforcement Officer II Certification from TDLR.
  • Must obtain Texas Animal Control Basic and Advanced Certifications through DSHS.
