Position SummaryPerform selected nursing and administrative/clerical duties that assist in the delivery of primary health care and patient care management under the direction of a physician. These duties are delegated in relation to the individual’s degree of training, in accordance with the objectives and policies of the organization and respective state laws governing such action and activities. Coordinates the scheduling of procedures, patient appointments, verification of insurance, and other clerical duties to meet the needs of the patient, physicians, and practice.
PositionEducation / Qualifications
- High School/GED preferred.
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
- BLS certification required, or must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
- Position requires travel; valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance are required.
- Bilingual — English/Spanish.
- One (1) year experience in a clinical setting most desirable.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Computer skills required with knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
- Good written and verbal communication skills required.
- Promotes the facility mission, vision and values by effectively communicating them to others. Considers mission, vision and values in developing services, standards and practices.
- Records patients’ medical history, vital statistics and information such as test results in medical records.
- Prepares treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean.
- Interviews patients to obtain medical information and measures their vital signs, weight, and height.
- Authorizes drug refills and provides prescription information to pharmacies.
- Prepares and administers medications as directed by a physician.
- Shows patients to examination rooms and prepares them for the physician.
- Assists the physician in the room as needed.
- Translates for patient/physician as needed.
- Explains treatment procedures, medications, diets and physicians’ instructions to patients.
- Helps physicians examine and treat patients, handing them instruments and materials or performing such tasks as giving injections or removing sutures.
- Collects blood, tissue or other laboratory specimens, logs the specimens, and prepares them for testing.
- Verifies insurance and obtains authorizations as needed.
- Schedules procedures according to policies, nursing and department staff availability, patient needs, and physician’s block time.
- Coordinates schedule assessing time and equipment availability, identifies conflicts and adjusts schedule as needed.
- Accurately prepares and facilitates daily completion of the schedule for timely distribution.
- Follows procedure for notification of changes in the schedule (e.g. cancellation, no show or rescheduled appointment).
- Maintains and protects each patient’s right to confidentiality.
- Answers telephone and intercom courteously and in a pleasant voice.
- Assumes clerical duties and responsibilities as necessary.
