Position: DIRECTOR OF STUDENT ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES
Provides vision and leadership for Student Accessibility Services, to fulfill the University's legal responsibilities to students under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and its amendments, to ensure equal access to university programs and services for students with disabilities.

Description of Duties

* Oversees processes which ensure professional, thorough, and efficient accommodation determinations; oversee process by which professional staff review student documentation, conduct intake appointments, and make accommodation decisions.

* Consults with leaders in key campus partner entities (including, but not limited to, the School of Medicine and Allied Health Programs, Academic Affairs, Student Rights and Responsibilities, Residence Life, Information Technology, Facilities Management Services, Safety and Environmental Health, Emergency Management, Office of Title IX and Equal Opportunity, Human Resources and Legal Affairs) to ensure that services are provided to students with disabilities in a holistic, universally-designed manner.

* Consults with University legal counsel, ADA Coordinator, and administration on compliance issues and risk mitigation as related to ADA compliance.

* Provides consultation and training for academic deans, department heads, and faculty on federal mandates to ensure that all programs are accessible and students are receiving reasonable accommodations.

* Oversees the collection and review of student disability documentation (i.e. medical, psychological and educational documentation) processes by which accommodations are implemented. Student Accessibility Services areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, knowledge of a wide range of disabilities, accommodated testing, note taking, alternative text and assistive technologies, deaf and hard of hearing services, and blind/low vision services.

* Advocates for facility physical access standards (universal design) to promote integration of disability considerations into the University's culture, policies and practices practices by keeping updated as to best practices, proposing strategic changes, and working with campus stakeholders as to potential changes.

* Oversees the coordination of services available to students with disabilities (e.g., ancillary aids and supports, alternative media, assistive technology, note-taking, test accommodations, tutoring, counseling, etc.).

* Coordinates staff development and training in areas related to learning assistance and accommodating students with disabilities as classified under the ADA.

* Responsible for coordinating with other Student Life departments and academic departments and contributing to campus-wide accessibility programming and workshops.

* Develops and maintains departmental guidelines, policies and procedures in accordance with best practices.

* Prepares, manages and monitors departmental budget and expenditures.

* Hires, trains, and supervises full-time staff and oversees the hiring, training and supervision of part-time staff in the Student Accessibility Services office.

* Coordinates external communications regarding Student Accessibility Services through the departmental website and other media sources.

* Oversees the procurement and maintenance of a variety of adaptive equipment.

* Coordinates and/or serves on the Disability Advisory Council and the Documentation Review Committee.

* Performs other duties as assigned.

General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Specific supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education

Master's degree from an accredited university in rehabilitation counseling, counseling, psychology, social work, special education or a related field.

Preferred Education

None.

Licenses/Certifications

Preferred:
Certification or licensure as mental health counselor (LMHC or LPC), Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), Psychologist, Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or similar certification.

Required Experience

Five (5) years of work experience with students with various disabilities. Working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as amended, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and experience in the application of these laws to accommodation requests in the academic setting. Training in and demonstrated ability to interpret educational, psychological, and medical documentation for students with varied learning, behavioral, physical and medical disabilities.

Preferred Experience

Knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to serving people with disabilities in post-secondary education. Working knowledge of accommodations for medical students in various settings (classroom, clerkship, residency) and licensing board requirements. Supervisory or managerial experience.

Equipment

Use of standard office equipment.

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required.
