POSITION SUMMARY:

The Nurse Technician is responsible for assisting in the delivery of both direct and indirect nursing care under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse. The Nurse Tech program is designed to help the student nurse grow and develop as a true nursing professional.

To help the student familiarize themselves to the hospital environment

To provide opportunities for interaction with physicians and other healthcare providers

To expand clinical knowledge and skills

The Nursing Technician performs basic patient care by assisting in the treatment and care of patients under the direction of a licensed nurse.

Minimum Position Qualifications:

Education:

Possesses high school diploma or GED Is a student nurse who can document successful completion of appropriate clinical courses. Appropriate courses include but are not limited to Med/Surg, Physical assessment, Pharmacology and Fundamentals.

POSITION EDUCATION/

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Proof of completion of two semesters of ADN or BSN Nursing Program required.
  • Current Student in Good standing with an Accredited Nursing Program. Required to submit transcript after each semester of nursing school.
  • Must take NCLEX exam within 6 months of graduation date. If unsuccessful within 6 months post-graduation, employment as a Nurse Tech will be terminated.
  • BLS Certification from American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Letter form the school of nursing (letterhead) stating "the applicant has successfully completed applicable number of semesters and is in good academic standing.
  • Must provide the hospital with "Hospital's Skills Checklist" signed by nursing instructor(s).
  • Able to provide the hospital with a minimum of 12 hours or one shift per pay period (every two weeks)
  • Some evening or weekend work will be required
  • Bilingual - English/Spanish preferred
  • Computer skills required with knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills required.

  • Knowledge of State, Federal, and JCAHO regulations

Responsibilities:

POSITION RESPONSIBILITES:
  • Promotes the facility mission, vision and values by effectively communicating them to others. Considers mission, vision and values in developing services, standards and practices.
  • Bathing, feeding, vital signs, shaving, oral care, turning and positioning patients.
  • May performs more complex procedures, including collecting specimens, oxygen therapy, dressing changes, wound irrigations, colostomy care, urinary catheterization and irrigation, tracheostomy care, oral, nasal suctioning, chest percussion, restraints, isolation procedures, heating-cooling blankets, as well as patient movement and use of equipment- only after competency/skills have been verified.
  • Serves and collects food trays. Assists with patient feeding.
  • Transports, positions and drapes patients for exams and treatments.
  • Assists patients in ambulating.
  • Takes and records vital signs, weights and I & O.
  • Passes and collects bed pans.
  • Changes bed linens.
  • Provides encouragement, support and comfort to patients and family members.
  • Monitors, records and communicates patient condition as appropriate utilizing computerized documentation systems.
  • Provides age and culturally appropriate care.
  • Orients and mentors new staff members.
  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
