Position Summary:
Performs the primary function of a professional nurse in assessing, planning, directing, and evaluating nursing care provided to patients. Responsible for interacting with hospital staff and/or ancillary departments regarding patient care, concerns, and conflicts by identifying and assisting in the resolutions. Operates during shift without Unit Clerk, Respiratory Therapy, Stroke Team, OB Support, Code Blue support, Phlebotomy and House Supervisor. FED Registered Nurses are responsible for, but not limited to, ventilator management, lab draws including ABGs, placing phone calls and answering calls, paging on-call resources, responding/activating Code Blue and housekeeping as needed.
Responsible and accountable for maintaining performance skills. This position may require working weekends, holidays, evenings, nights, overtime, and/or on an on‑call/call‑back status.

- Interact with hospital staff and/or ancillary departments regarding patient care, concerns, and conflicts by identifying and assisting in the resolutions.
- Operate during shift without Unit Clerk, Respiratory Therapy, Stroke Team, OB Support, Code Blue support, Phlebotomy and House Supervisor.
- Manage ventilator care, conduct lab draws including ABG, handle phone calls, page on‑call resources, and respond to or activate Code Blue as required.
- Perform housekeeping duties as needed and maintain performance skills.
- RN licensure in the State of Texas.
- Willingness to be cross‑trained to other unit areas.
- Commitment to and adherence to STHS’s Compliance Program and Code of Conduct, including compliance with all policies and procedures and reporting suspected compliance issues.
- Registered Nurse currently licensed in the State of Texas, or part of a compact state license, or holds a valid temporary RN license while awaiting a permanent license.
- Effective January 6, 2012, must possess an Associate Degree, Baccalaureate Degree, or Diploma from a School of Nursing or University, or be a new graduate RN with a permit to practice in Texas and documentation of program completion.
- Must obtain and maintain current certifications as follows:
- BCLS/CPR – current upon hire and thereafter.
- ACLS – required for FED RN; RN with ≤1 year experience may obtain within 12 months of hire, RN with >1 year within 6 months.
- PALS – same timeline requirements as ACLS.
- NRP – same timeline requirements as ACLS.
- TNCC – required for FED RN; same timeline requirements as ACLS.
- CPI – required for FED RN; same timeline requirements as ACLS.
- Familiarity with basic nursing performance standards as outlined in the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
- Pass the Medication Assessment within 3 months of joining the department with a score of 90% or greater.
