APRN Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:
The Peri anesthesia APRN facilitates professional leadership and related specialized care to the pre‑operative patient population, with the intent of optimizing patient outcomes and improving the pre‑operative preparation of patients to decrease or prevent surgical delays or cancellations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Functions within scope of practice, under the supervision of an attending.
  • Has excellent communication and customer service skills, proven excellence in clinical care and supervisory skills.
  • Participates and assists with coordination and continuity of care.
  • Demonstrates ethical business practices and personal actions that adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines.
  • Assists with physician‑directed care including:
    • Write appropriate orders (e.g., nursing care, medication orders, laboratory and imaging/radiological examinations).
    • Review pertinent abnormal findings in the patient’s history, physical examination, radiological, and laboratory data with supervising physician, and obtain appropriate referrals or additional studies as needed.
    • Initiate suitable medical interventions.
    • Perform pre‑operative physical assessments and obtain history and physical information for procedures, and order necessary pre‑operative laboratory testing or clearances.
    • Collaborate with an anesthesiologist to determine pre‑operative medication orders.
    • Manage data for the pre‑op program for research, outcomes, and/or reporting purposes.
  • Assists with physician‑directed care (continued):
    • If applicable, performs and records history and physical examinations (initial admissions and consults will be seen by attending prior to implementing plan of care).
    • If applicable, completes consultations approved by the supervising physician with follow‑up as indicated.
    • Ensures testing has been completed, results verified, reviews labs/studies and vital signs, and completes progress notes as indicated.
    • Advises supervising physician of unexpected events, providing an accurate synopsis and describing corrective measures taken.
    • Daily assessment of patient’s hospital course, writes notes of patient progress, and implements indicated therapy as determined by the supervising physician.
    • Serves as a resource for clinical staff, providing interpretation, findings, and family orientation.
    • Coordinates meetings, communicates between the pre‑op clinic and primary care physicians and/or specialists, and recommends specialty services if needed.
  • Coordinates all activity necessary for the pre‑operative program, including:
    • Schedules and performs face‑to‑face patient interviews for high‑risk patients (ASA 3+, high‑risk procedures).
    • Coordinates high‑risk patient anesthesiologist review as deemed necessary.
    • Consults with anesthesiologist for decisions related to postponement/cancellation of a procedure.
    • Assures all patient testing is completed, assessed, and reported three days prior to surgery.
    • Acts as a liaison between physicians and other staff.
    • Maintains a database of current patients.
    • Assists with coordination of discharge planning and/or follow‑up.
Education and/or Experience
  • Master’s or Post‑Master’s Degree, required.
  • Graduation from a Nurse Practitioners Program with practice authority in the State of Texas, required.
  • 1‑2 years of pediatric experience, preferred.
  • 1‑2 years in peri‑operative or peri‑anesthesia, preferred.
Certificates, Licensure, Registration
  • Advanced Practice Certification (selected).
  • Family Nurse Practitioner, Board Certified (FNP‑C or FNP‑BC).
  • Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, Board Certified (NNP‑BC).
  • Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Board Certified – Primary Care (PNP or CPNP‑PC).
  • Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Board Certified – Acute Care (CPNP‑AC).
  • Active and unencumbered nurse practitioner and registered nurse license in the State of Texas, required.
  • Advanced specialty courses and ongoing education requirements as required by DCH.
  • DCH Credentialing obtained within required time frame and continuously maintained.
