RN Trauma Performance Improvement Nurse, Trauma

Summary:

The Trauma Performance Improvement Nurse is responsible for coordination of trauma PI activities for DHR Health Level I Trauma Center. Responsibilities include clinical rounding on trauma patients, updating the trauma registry database, and identifying any performance improvement opportunities. The Performance Improvement nurse provides trauma education opportunities to hospital staff and EMS providers to improve trauma care.

Position Education/

Qualifications:
  • Graduate from an accredited professional nursing program
  • Current RN licensure by Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS required within 6 months of hire
  • TNCC or TCAR certification required within (6) months of hire
  • Trauma Outcomes and Performance Improvement Course (TOPIC) within (1) year of hire
  • TCRN Preferred
Responsibilities:
  • Promotes the facility mission, vision and values by effectively communicating them to others. Considers mission, vision and values in developing services, standards and practices.
  • Represents DHR Health Trauma Services Department favorably to the community
  • Consults with the Trauma Program Director and Trauma Medical Director to enhance overall program direction.
  • Maintains all patient, staff, and DHR information and documents in compliance with hospital policies regarding patient confidentiality and privacy.
  • Assists in validity of collected data.
  • Conducts audit reviews of trauma charts and identifies PI/QI opportunities.
  • Attends patients rounds, and collaborates with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate patient care for process improvement initiatives
  • Recognizes care concerns and assists in the development of corrective action measures to ensure loop closure/resolution
  • Monitors and trends PI indicators as outlined by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS-COT), Texas DSHS, and hospital criteria
  • Assists with process of real time chart reviews for Trauma Review committee and other meetings
  • Ensures the facility meets all requirements to maintain its Trauma Center designation.
  • Assists with education programs for medical staff, nursing staff and other health care professionals providing care to trauma patients.
  • Participates in regional, state, and national trauma committees.
  • Ensures on-going education to maintain current knowledge on TQIP, NTDB, ACS-COT, Texas DSHS standards and best practices.
  • Assists with trauma billing.
  • Participates in injury prevention, research, and trauma related projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Other Information:

JOB KNOWLEDGE/

EXPERIENCE:

  • At least 3 years Emergency Medicine, Critical Care and/or Trauma Nursing experience
  • Experience with data collection, analysis, and report writing
  • Understand concepts of quality and performance improvement preferred
  • Experience with PI quality projects
  • Requires ability to work independently and within groups
  • Knowledge of State, Federal, JCAHO regulations and Trauma designation criteria.
  • Computer skills required with knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Continuing education in trauma related/clinical care topics
  • Good written and verbal communications skills required

Provide excellent customer service to all DHR customers. All employees are required to attend the DHR C.A.R.E.S program which outlines the Customer Service Principals including:

AGE SPECIFIC:

Employees must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirement relative to his or her age.
