Trainee position to pursue research as a vital component of their educational mission and professional career development. Under limited supervision and with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment, performs complex research work by assisting in the development, implementation, and monitoring of specialized research projects. Manages the upkeep, training, and supervision of specialized research equipment within area of assigned responsibility.
Responsibilities- Develop and test vaccines against infectious diseases, particularly tuberculosis.
- Work with conventional laboratory reagents, instrumentation, and molecular/tissue biology techniques.
- Operate and generate data utilizing advanced instrumentation/techniques, flow cytometry, confocal imaging, live animal IVIS, and CT-PET machines.
- Design in vitro and in vivo (murine model) experiments.
- Record and analyze research data, write protocols and manuscripts.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Ph.D. in Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, or a closely related field from an accredited university. (Given funding restrictions, the degree may need to have been conferred within a set period of time prior to assuming the position.)
Preferred Experience- Experience with animal research, immunology, and advanced instrumentation such as flow cytometry and confocal imaging.
- Prior experience in vaccine studies.
Use of personal computer and proficiency in software and research statistical applications.
Working ConditionsSuccessful completion of all required duties in an office/research environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
