Plant Operator

General Purpose of Job:
Operation and maintenance of power, heat and cooling systems in the hospital.

• Fires boilers and controls the generation of a continuous supply of heating for hospital buildings, machinery, auxiliary equipment, laundries and sterilizing equipment as needed.
• Maintains chillers, cooling tower, and controls the generation of a continuous supply of chilled water for cooling the hospital as needed.
• Tours boiler room and air handler unit rooms to observe operating equipment, meters, and gauges to ensure operation is in accordance with specifications.
• Adjusts equipment controls to correct malfunctions when indicated by observation or in response to a signal light.
• Records meters, gauges, readings, and repair work performed in a log book.
• Uses specified chemicals periodically to test and treat boiler water and cooling tower.
• Performs minor repairs such as replacing worn gaskets, tightening joints, and replacing defective meters.
• Cleans the insides of boilers and chillers as needed.
• Performs other duties such as keeping boiler rooms clean and painted.
• Assembles and maintains small equipment such as furniture and lawn mowers as needed.
• Practices preventative maintenance as outlined in the department PM program.
• Maintains records and logs on all boilers and chillers.
• Performs cleaning, inspection, adjustments, lubrication, and documentation on all hospital equipment assigned to maintenance on a schedule of weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi‑annually, and annually.
• Ensures all equipment, supplies, tools, and work materials are never left unattended.
• Secures all job sites prior to leaving them unattended.
• Provides reliable transportation; position may require driving.

• High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED); or a minimum of five years of related experience in air conditioning, plumbing, mechanical engineering, or plant maintenance.

• Clear, unrestricted driver’s license.
