Scope of Job

Performs entry‑level heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) mechanical work. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Description of Duties
  • Installs, repairs, and performs preventative maintenance on basic air conditioning and heating systems.
  • Performs and/or assists in calibrating, installing, maintaining, and repairing pneumatic thermostats, air handlers, refrigeration equipment, ice makers, compressors, fans, blowers, motors, water pumps, insulation, valves, boilers, and all other related equipment and devices.
  • Completes routine maintenance chores, such as cleaning units, filter replacement, rust removal and repainting, draining and filling oil reservoirs.
  • Completes and closes work orders and enters time worked and materials used on portable devices.
  • Assists in the installation of new systems and/or the replacement of old systems.
  • Assists with equipment overhaul and maintenance to include air compressors and pumps associated with HVAC systems.
  • Repairs and replaces worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors, and water and vacuum pumps.
  • Repairs or adjusts valves, piping connections, fittings, and couplings.
  • Assists with equipment testing for refrigerant leak, charging, and metering device issues.
  • Removes and installs motors, thermostats, and humidistats.
  • Maintains records on repairs and service to equipment.
  • Works under close supervision.
  • Assists in the setup and installation of complex HVAC electrical components.
  • Develops HVAC repair list.
  • Fulfills position on call and rotating shift as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education

High School Diploma or GED, and successful completion of post‑secondary education in an Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Program.

Licenses/Certifications

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Universal Certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date). Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) Registered Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (ACR) Technician. As a condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a university‑owned vehicle for official university business. Applicants may be subject to a motor vehicle record check for the most recent 36 months.

Out‑of‑state drivers are required to submit a 36‑month history MVR from prior state of residence.

Required Experience

One (1) year of skilled‑level experience as a refrigeration or AC mechanic to include installation, maintenance, or repair of basic HVACR systems.

Skilled in the use of tools required to maintain and repair HVAC equipment.

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent is expected to report to campus and provide the essential services designated. Industrial, office, and educational environment. Exposure to outside environment such as hot, dry, wet, cold; some work in restricted spaces, exposure to dust, some duties and working conditions may create bodily strain and discomfort.

Duties may involve the lifting and moving of heavy objects, stooping, crawling, climbing, reaching, and other activities requiring physical exertion. Danger of falls, chemicals, electrical shock and burns, and hazards and conditions inherent to the trade or assignment. Work involves occasionally having to respond to emergencies on a 24/7 basis. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Other
