Scope of JobPerforms complex advanced (journey-level) heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) mechanical work. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Description of Duties- Performs complex advanced (journey-level) repairs and maintenance on all air conditioning and refrigeration systems independently.
- Calibrates, installs, maintains, and repairs pneumatic thermostats, air handlers, refrigeration equipment ice makers, compressors, fans, motors, water pumps, insulation, valves, boilers, and all other related equipment and devices.
- Performs equipment overhauls and preventive maintenance functions to include servicing air compressors and pumps associated with HVAC equipment and systems.
- Configures and installs complex HVAC electrical components, new systems and/or replaces old systems.
- Completes and closes work orders (W.O) and enters time worked and materials used on portable devices.
- Repairs and replaces worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors, and water and vacuum pumps.
- Repairs or adjusts valves, piping connections, fittings, and couplings.
- Tests equipment for refrigerant leak, charging, and metering device issues.
- Removes and installs motors, thermostats, and humidistats.
- Adjusts the expansion valves and add gas to refrigeration units.
- Maintains records and prepares reports on service and repairs to equipment.
- Works under limited supervision.
- May provide guidance to lower-level technicians.
- Monitors performance of HVAC systems and makes recommendations for increased energy efficiency in operations.
- Plans and oversees HVAC system replacement and renovation projects.
- Develops HVAC repair estimates.
- Inspects jobsites to ensure contract compliance, proper workmanship, and safety.
- Reviews the work of others to ensure compliance with applicable codes or ordinances.
- Fulfills position on call and rotating shift as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Required EducationHigh School Diploma or GED, and successful completion of post‑secondary education in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Program.

Licenses/CertificationsEnvironmental Protection Agency (EPA) Universal Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date. Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) Registered Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (ACR) Technician. Preferred: TDLR ACR Certified Technician. As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty‑six (36) month history.
Out‑of‑state drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s).
Three (3) years of skilled/journeyman level experience as refrigeration or HVACR mechanic.
Preferred ExperienceExperience with the design, installation, maintenance, or repair of complex HVACR systems. Experience reading and interpreting diagrams such as technical drawings or blueprints.
EquipmentSkilled in the use of tools required to maintain and repair HVAC equipment.
Working ConditionsNeeds to be able to successfully perform all required duties. This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated. Industrial, office and educational environment. Exposure to outside environment such as hot, dry, wet, cold; some work in restricted spaces, exposure to dust, some duties and working conditions may create bodily strain and discomfort.
