Summary
This position is located in the Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ), Field Operations staff and assigned to Facility Operations. If selected, you'll be responsible for providing labor and equipment operation for this large, multi-faceted facility. This position supports the New World screwworm response.
Major Duties- Assists journeyman Technicians in loading and unloading supplies and equipment from trucks.
- Mows, trims, and edges lawns, fields, fence lines, and ditches on the 948 acres of the facility with industrial mowers and large tractors.
- Operates tractors with various attachments such as sprayers that spray herbicides including roundup, which expands out and sprays 20 feet wide; farm plows; and farm disks that are 20 feet wide.
- Operates backhoes and skid steers.
- Makes multiple mechanical and hydraulic connections between the towed or attached equipment and the tractor and makes numerous equipment adjustments.
- Performs operator maintenance on tractors and equipment.
- Services trucks, tractors, heavy equipment; checks oil, transmission, and hydraulic oils; and power washes vehicles and equipment.
- Performs routine maintenance on equipment such as hand tools, chainsaws, push and riding lawnmowers, tractors, backhoes, and fork lifts.
- Maintains lawn sprinkler systems, replaces heads and electric valves, and adjusts heads.
- Power washes buildings, sidewalks, and parking lots.
- Reads electric, water, and gas meters on a monthly basis.
This position does not have an education qualification requirement.
EvaluationsApplications will be evaluated in accordance with Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) Delegated Examining Procedures and USDA policy using category rating. Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of three categories:
Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. Category placement will be determined based on applicants' quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:
