Position: Shop Service Technician 2

Overview

This mechanic position is responsible for performing inspections, diagnoses, and repairs of diesel-powered heavy equipment and related equipment or components, following established procedures and guidelines. The role works independently or as a member of a team to provide mechanical services that satisfy customer needs and achieve departmental goals.

Entry‑level position – generally requires two or more years of experience and/or demonstrated job‑relevant knowledge or skills. Relies on instructions and pre‑established guidelines to perform the functions of the job; works under moderate supervision.

The incumbent is expected to model the following practices daily: demonstrate alignment with the company’s mission and core values; collaborate with key internal and external resources; and participate in ongoing self‑development.

Essential Functions
  • Models, promotes, reinforces, and rewards the consistent use of HOLT’s Values Based Leadership (VBL) tools, models, and processes to ensure alignment with our vision, values, and mission.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment malfunctions and failures.
  • Disassembles and assembles machine components to manufacturer’s specifications using hand tools, pneumatic tools, and specialized tooling.
  • Rebuilds, repairs, reconditions, and maintains equipment and components.
  • Demonstrates good customer relations and support; communicates customer needs to shop management.
  • Plans and controls the cost of repair jobs.
  • Completes parts orders and identifies parts for return.
  • Mentors and helps train other technicians.
  • Maintains all equipment and work areas – keeps them in good, clean, and orderly condition.
  • Works safely at all times and adheres to all applicable safety policies; complies with all company policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Works overtime as required by workload and customers’ needs.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities (e.g., Pro Tech Technician Training Paths).
  • Requires regular and punctual employee attendance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment machines such as dozers, excavators, motor graders, and other dirt‑moving equipment.
  • Proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems.
  • Quality control analysis skills – conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance and communicate findings.
  • Operation and control skills – controlling operations of equipment or systems.
  • Equipment selection skills – determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Ability to operate a forklift and an overhead crane.
  • Ability to quickly and repeatedly operate the controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positions.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair.
  • Ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand information.
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Must have/acquire basic mechanic hand and pneumatic tools (metric/standard).
Requirements Education and Experience
  • At least two years of diesel-powered heavy equipment repair experience preferred.
  • Ability and knowledge to read and use schematics and diagrams; experience is preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Graduation from a diesel technology program preferred.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to move objects and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.
  • Frequently moves materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
