Overview
This mechanic position is responsible for performing inspections, diagnoses, and repairs of diesel-powered heavy equipment and related equipment or components, following established procedures and guidelines. The role works independently or as a member of a team to provide mechanical services that satisfy customer needs and achieve departmental goals.
Entry‑level position – generally requires two or more years of experience and/or demonstrated job‑relevant knowledge or skills. Relies on instructions and pre‑established guidelines to perform the functions of the job; works under moderate supervision.
The incumbent is expected to model the following practices daily: demonstrate alignment with the company’s mission and core values; collaborate with key internal and external resources; and participate in ongoing self‑development.

- Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment malfunctions and failures.
- Disassembles and assembles machine components to manufacturer’s specifications using hand tools, pneumatic tools, and specialized tooling.
- Rebuilds, repairs, reconditions, and maintains equipment and components.
- Demonstrates good customer relations and support; communicates customer needs to shop management.
- Plans and controls the cost of repair jobs.
- Completes parts orders and identifies parts for return.
- Mentors and helps train other technicians.
- Maintains all equipment and work areas – keeps them in good, clean, and orderly condition.
- Works safely at all times and adheres to all applicable safety policies; complies with all company policies, procedures, and standards.
- Works overtime as required by workload and customers’ needs.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities (e.g., Pro Tech Technician Training Paths).
- Requires regular and punctual employee attendance.

- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of heavy equipment machines such as dozers, excavators, motor graders, and other dirt‑moving equipment.
- Proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems.
- Quality control analysis skills – conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance and communicate findings.
- Operation and control skills – controlling operations of equipment or systems.
- Equipment selection skills – determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
- Ability to operate a forklift and an overhead crane.
- Ability to quickly and repeatedly operate the controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positions.
- Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair.
- Ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
- Ability to read, write, and understand information.
- Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
- Must have/acquire basic mechanic hand and pneumatic tools (metric/standard).
- At least two years of diesel-powered heavy equipment repair experience preferred.
- Ability and knowledge to read and use schematics and diagrams; experience is preferred.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Graduation from a diesel technology program preferred.

- Must be able to move objects and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.
- Frequently moves materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
