Traffic Safety Engineer

Overview Atkins

Réalis is seeking a Traffic Safety Engineer to join our New Jersey Safety Team. This is an entry‑level position based in Ewing Township, NJ.

• Work in‑person as an embedded employee five days a week at the New Jersey DOT HQ in Ewing Township, NJ.
• Be well‑versed in the design and implementation of Traffic Engineering devices, ITS devices (WWD, V2X), and TSMO strategies (geofencing for targeted message sharing) and other roadway safety devices.
• Be knowledgeable of Data‑Driven Safety Analyses, Safe System Approach, the New Jersey 2025 Strategic Highway Safety Plan, crash data analysis, crash modification factors, FHWA proven safety countermeasures, and their design and implementation.
• Have understanding of and interaction with various states’ Intersection Control Evaluation tools (preference).
• Review plans, drawings, and recommendations to ensure solutions meet agency guidelines for complete streets and safe systems.
• Assist in engineering investigations and planning work with a well‑defined scope.
• Support development of planned/unplanned events, traffic data, road geometrics, construction plans, and other inputs to understand and plan traffic impacts and mitigation strategies.
• Assist in planning, design, and production of engineering drawings and maps, and prepare specifications.
• Prepare concise reports of sections of more complex reports under periodic review.
• Research feasibility of alternative design approaches, site conditions, and regulatory agency specifications.
• Participate in quality control checks, maintain quality standards, and review designs and drawings performed by others.
• Coordinate with other disciplines as required, and perform field observations of construction where appropriate.
• Perform other duties as directed by the supervisor.

• 0–2 years of professional experience in a related technical field.
• Completion of a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET‑accredited college/university.
• Proficiency with dashboards, modeling and simulation software, and other tools needed to analyze transportation data.
• No professional registration required.

Expected annual compensation range is $75,000–$90,000, depending on skills, experience, and location.
