We are seeking a Senior Traffic Engineer to play a key role in expanding and strengthening our transportation practice in our Edison, NJ office. This role will focus on bridge, roadway, and infrastructure projects throughout NJ and NY, including work with state and municipal transportation agencies.
This opportunity is ideal for an experienced traffic professional who wants to take on a larger role beyond day-to-day design work. The position will involve leading technical efforts, supporting project pursuits, mentoring junior staff, and collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams. The Senior Traffic Engineer will work closely with structural, civil, and infrastructure professionals to integrate traffic engineering solutions from early planning through final design and construction.
Responsibilities- Perform and review traffic engineering analyses including capacity analysis, signal analysis, intersection evaluations, and corridor studies using tools such as Synchro, HCS, VISSIM, or similar software
- Lead preparation of Maintenance & Protection of Traffic (MPT) plans and staging plans for bridge and roadway projects
- Develop traffic control, signing, and pavement marking plans based on NJDOT, NJTA, NYSDOT, NYCDOT, and MUTCD standards
- Support traffic impact studies and transportation improvement projects
- Coordinate with civil and structural engineering teams to develop practical and constructible traffic solutions
- Serve as a technical lead on traffic engineering assignments
- Participate in site visits, field reviews, and constructability evaluations
- Assist with agency coordination and client communication related to traffic operations and work zones
- Support proposals, presentations, and business development initiatives
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the growth of the transportation team
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering (Transportation focus preferred)
- 8+ years of traffic engineering experience, including DOT-related projects
- NJ Professional Engineer (PE) license required; NY PE preferred or ability to obtain
- PTOE certification preferred
- Experience working with NJDOT, NJTA, NYSDOT, or NYCDOT standards and procedures
- Strong background in MPT, staging, and work zone traffic control
- Experience with traffic analysis software such as Synchro, HCS, VISSIM, or similar
- Signal design and timing experience preferred
- Ability to manage multiple projects, mentor staff, and work collaboratively
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
