Overview
University Correctional Health Care (UCHC), operating within Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, provides physical, mental health, dental and sex offender treatment services to individuals involved in the criminal justice system in New Jersey. The Midstate Correctional Facility in Wrightstown, NJ seeks a Part‑time Staff Nurse to deliver ambulatory care to inmates, focusing on physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs.
Job PurposeUtilize the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for residents, including adolescents, adults, and their families, within the correctional environment.
Hours & ShiftPart‑time (20 hours per week). Evening shift on a full onsite work arrangement.
Duties- Provide direct and indirect nursing care to meet the physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of residents.
- Perform assessments in various settings such as initial intake, sick call unit, emergency situations, chronic care clinics, and infirmary.
- Collaborate with health‑care professionals and security officers in the correctional environment.
- Identify inmate‑centered goals and nursing objectives, implementing appropriate interventions.
- Plan and coordinate nursing care based on assessments, making timely referrals as required.
- As team leader or charge nurse, delegate duties to other team members and guide the provision of care.
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
- License to practice nursing in the State of New Jersey.
- CPR certification (required).
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to and from the site.
Preferred
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a correctional setting.
Must be capable of performing CPR for at least 10 minutes, lift and carry a 45‑pound emergency bag up and down stairs, and aid in lifting and rotating patients weighing up to 50 pounds.
