Job Goal:
Facilitate communication between the deaf student(s) and others (teachers, peers, school staff) in the educational environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provide appropriate communication between the hearing impaired/deaf student(s) and hearing persons in the school (e/g/ teachers, administrators, staff members, peers). This may include sign language, finger-spelling, and/or voicing.
2. Provide tutoring, assistance, extra explanation, and/or rephrasing for lessons as necessary for clarification of concepts.
3. Become familiar in advance with lesson content, vocabulary, videos, and/or handouts in order to be prepared for communicating/signing appropriate material to the student(s).
4. Assist the classroom teacher with activities and/or equipment related to the student's needs. (e.g. hearing aids, auditory training equipment, sound field system, TTY, closed captioning, note- taking, preferential seating.)
5. Provide additional interpreting for special activities or extracurricular activities, with appropriate compensation.
6. Aid other school personnel in understanding the educational needs, communication style, and distinct culture of the deaf.
7. Maintain student confidentiality at all times.
8. Observe and follow policies set by the Board of Education.
9. Follow the RID Code of Ethics as it pertains to the educational environment.
10. Other duties may be assigned.
Length of
Contract:
One Hundred seventy-four(174) contract days.
Salary commensurate with experience on the negotiated agreement of the Support Employees of Edmond (SEE).
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Building Administrator in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policies, state law, and the negotiated agreement with the Support Employees of Edmond (SEE).
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES:
None.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND/OR
EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
QAST or EIPA certification is preferred but not required. Applicant should be able to demonstrate required signing skills/proficiency necessary for the educational setting.
LANGUAGE
SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret educational curriculum materials appropriate for the grade level of the student. Ability to communicate in the language mode appropriate for the student's needs. Ability to demonstrate effective written communication. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, staff, parents, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL
SKILLS:
Ability to interpret/tutor math curriculum appropriate for the age/grade of the student. Ability to plan budgets and use the mathematical skills required to do so. Maintain accurate records and support documentation for projects under the supervision of the position.
REASONING
SKILLS:
Ability to effectively communicate with school personnel regarding the educational needs of the student. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
